You'd have to really want it for that price. Probably sold for under $2-3 when originally purchased. I think I'd much rather have a modern reel at half the cost (of the current bid).

Currently at $314 for a Medalist? Yikes!

I have a weakness for old reels. The current market reflects how popular "vintage" reels have become.

Man, I just can't work up $341 worth of affection for a Medalist of any age or condition. Wow. I just paid half that for a Hardy Maquis Salmon No.3 in as-new condition WITH a new fly line on it.

I hope I find enthusiastic buyers when my collections of Medalists get sold. My oldest one has the oval line guide, but it is also RHW which makes it less useful to me. Some Medalists are easy to convert but the older ones are not.

My typical purchase price as $20-40 with a fly line usually included. I have paid more for other reels that delivered less satisfaction than the Medalists.

But, there is little doubt that most of us have way more gear than we can reasonably use.

I collect old fly reels and have a 1392 (no line guide) but not in that condition. It's not unusual to see collectable reels go for 2 or 3 times that amount. BobK

That is ridiculous. Whoever wins (loses) that auction at that price just threw their money away.

Oh, and I have some "vintage" gear for sale too......... ;)

80 year old fly reel.

Postby Rasputinj » February 20th, 2016, 5:39 pm

I know some medalists hold value, the hard thing for me is that they remind me of my first setup as a kid in the mid 80's which had a used medalist on it. All I thought about once I had a medalist and fenwick fiberglass rod was how I was going to upgrade it. I eventually purchased a Sage and a Marryat reel. When I think of old reels I like I only really like Hardy St George, Hardy Perfect. Even with those reels I am looking for reels that are not that old, my Perfect is from the 70's. I am too clumsy to have very expensive reels. All of my reels have scratches on them.

Reels are supposed to have scratches on them....or they're not used enough.
