Dump alert

Postby Papasequoia » January 20th, 2017, 3:53 pm

Some years ago I signed up for 'dump alerts' at mammothmountain.com to get an email whenever a certain level of snow was reached from a storm. This year they just keep on coming and coming and coming. It is now officially the snowiest January on record and they still have to finish this storm and count on the bigger one coming in a couple of days. Here is some info from today's dump alert:

Snow Conditions: Fresh Powder Season Total: 286"
New Snow: 38-48" Base Depth: 150-280"
Day Temp: 19°F Wind: Moderate
Shattering Snowfall Records
January 2017 will forever be remembered as record-shattering. With over 15 feet of snow at Main Lodge this month, it's officially the snowiest January in history. We are only halfway through this massive storm cycle, picking up 3-4 feet in the last 2 days with much more on the way. Our sights are set on breaking the most monthly snowfall of ALL TIME – only 27" to go.

That's a good one, there's also a Crowley one and if you go to mammothmountain.com and click on webcams they have five that you can get control of - I like the one in the village (which is also a webcam geocache).

Very funny, Curtis, but that reminds me that I just finished my coffee... TMI?

Respect. The mere smell of fresh coffee in the AM sends me scrambling.

Currently there are chain restrictions from Cartago north. There is 6" of new snow on my patio and they are now calling for another 18" here in Bishop by tomorrow (Monday) morning. There was 2+ ft of snow at Hot Cr. (duck hunting) before these storms started on Wednesday. It's pretty awsome to look around and think that we were still in a drought one week ago. Who knows, maybe we still are. BobK

It's been a slow season. I deked a couple of times since the 1st with very few birds taken. I also deked for Honkers but have only gotten 1 so far. It's been a slow year for me. Right now you can only get around on snowshoes or skis, so it makes it tough. If there were signs ( which there hasn't been) of birds moving in between storms, the jump shooting would be awsome. Most people won't attempt it on snowshoes. Will look south tomorrow as there are some birds on the river and ponds down here, but the roads are going to suck. BobK

I'll be up there this weekend with Lucy , hopefully. She got her stitches out a week ago but the weather has been too windy and wet for quail. We will be looking for those Chukar. I hope that the roads will dry out a little, but I am expecting muck. I hope that the last week of the season goes well for you Bob.

It is MUCK. Independence and Big Pine got more snow than Bishop in this last storm. Even so, 395 is jclosed from Gorge rd(base of Shewin Grade to June lake. My salt water fishing partner who lives at Hot Cr Ranch is basically "snowed in" partly due to a broken Snow Plow. I went as far as Tinnemaha this morning but couldn't get up the road to the lookout. 12-18 in. of snow there, but very muddy. BobK
