Turd Clumps

I've asked this question a couple of times in the SALTWATER section - with no responses I assume because very few people read the salt section. So I'm posting it here.

Anyone know what these things are, seriously? I call them "turd clumps" because that's pretty much what they look like. No, I haven't felt it necessary to smell them. They vary in sizes from golf balls to baseballs, and occasionally bigger. My flies seem to routinely latch onto them as they're bouncing off the bottom of the bay - particularly in the South Bay waters (Bayside Park, Pepper, Chula Marina). Whatever, I'm sick of them grabbing my flies.

I don't know. I think juvenile white seabass are called turd rollers, or something like that.

Two things I could surmise.....one is some sort of thing like a nudibranch that crawls around on the bottom like a sea cucumber. 2....some sort of raw sewage clump from ships dumping heads. Either way, kinda nasty looking.

I was thinking that maybe they are balls of mud, debris and that underwater moss - the bright, almost-neon green stuff thats really stringy and thin as thread. I dont know. Whatever it is, its disgusting knowing that one of those things are coming up. And whats worse is, I've gotten so many of them that now I know what they feel like when I snag them, and I can call it before I even get it off the bottom. Now that sucks.

They do show you that you are getting your flies down to the bottom (where a lot of the fish are feeding)

I don't think any IGFA records will be set with them.

So, you may want to consider latex gloves when you handle them.

When it comes time to re-tie a fly, you may want to think about submerging the fly into the local water instead of licking the knot with your tongue.
