El Dorado NF fishing?

El Dorado NF fishing?

Postby mtnguru » May 30th, 2017, 5:18 pm

On Sunday, I'm headed up to the Sacramento area (Ione, about 20 minutes southeast) for work for seven weeks. I hope to get away for a weekend or two and was looking for any suggestions on fishing or camping spots in the western portion of El Dorado National Forest. I'm not prying for any super secret spots, I just want to get away for a night and possibly wet a line in between studying and sleep. I think the Tahoe area might be a little far but I'm open to any suggestions.

PMs welcome and thanks for any input!

Chris-I might suggest you try and contact someone in fire on the El Dorado and see who is a fly fisherman. I would also contact the fisheries specialist on that or forests next door. They are pretty good about sharing that information.

What course are you taking or teaching?

Mokelumne River (tailwater) as it exits Lake Camanche. Check the regs and make sure it's open.

Head up Hwy 4 and fish the North Fork of the Stanislaus, either at Boards Crossing or in Big Trees State Park (worth a visit even if you're not fishing) or Beaver Creek in Big Trees.

Depending on when you'll be in the area, if the roads are clear you could go up Hwy 88 and then head to the Silver Fork of the American or Caples Creek. Or go up to Carson Pass on Hwy 88 and hike in to Winnemucca Lake. Or go a little further and try the West Fork of the Carson in Hope Valley.

Given the snowpack and runoff, I'm not sure what you'll find at each of these locations. None of these are secret locations. Let us know how it goes.
