ID Insects/Entomology - Pocket guide suggestions?

Postby huntingtheriverking » March 10th, 2021, 11:57 am

I am interested in improving my very limited ability to identify different streamside insects. I have seen several books recommended on the topic, but I would also like to find a simple pocket guide (ideally, PDF or image that I could place on my phone) to help me quickly identify the general type of insect I find.

The closest I've found is this:

Which is nice but I'd like something in a similar vein, just with a bit more detail.

This may not be quite what you're looking for, but you can download it to your mobile device for handy streamside references. This is BY FAR the best book I've seen covering western hatches and I highly recommend it.

I've got a good pocket book called "Hatch Guide For Western Streams," by Jim Schollmeyer.

I second the Schollmeyer pocket size book BUT it only comes in hard copy, no digital. Pictures are so helpful

An Anglers Guide to Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations by Rick Hafele and Scott Roederer is my “Go To” reference. More insect biology than you will ever use afield. I usually try to big a sample or photo home or back to camp for proper ID.
