A Warning About Water Temps…

Postby darrin terry » July 19th, 2009, 8:52 pm

Well, Dan and I went up into the Western Sierra and spent a few hours fishing one of the larger creeks. This creek gets planted twice weekly when conditions permit.

Evidently conditions no longer permit.

After fishing in some surprisingly low flows through the morning, we called it quits about 1 PM, we saw a number of wild and planted fish both. Only brought one to hand, though several others were hooked up. At about 11 AM, I checked the water temp - 66°. Still fishable early in the day, but getting a bit high. As we were walking back to the truck, we talked to an older gentleman that works in the area. He said the creek was planted twice last week, but this week the truck showed and left without leaving fish. Obviously the hatchery truck driver decided the conditions were no longer supportive of planting. That in itself is fine with me, but it serves as a sign that creek conditions are dropping.

The only flies we could get any fish interested in were Elk Hair Caddis and Sponge Bob Caddis in 14 & 16.

Anyway. thought I'd post up about the water temps. The last couple weeks have seen me on small to medium sized creeks and temps and flows were good. It will depend on your local and the specific water you fish, but please keep temps in mind. :D
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Hey Darrin,

Thanks for the heads up. What elevation were you.

Sad to say I only got one creek trip in so far this year. Hope to squeeze in a couple in the fall.

We were just under 6000 feet. Surprised by the flows more than the temps. Most area I've been to have had decent flows so far. Temps have been good elsewhere too, enough so that I've not been checking them with the thermometer.

Depending on where you are fishing, or planning to, it is getting to that time of year in the Western Sierra. Hopefully the East side creeks are coming into shape. I had heard they were running high pretty late this season.

I would like to see some kind regulations that close streams that have C&R wild trout sections, when the water temps get to warm to release fish with a poor chance of survival. Montana has regulations that close streams to fishing when the water temps warm up. They are much more on top of maintaining a top quality fishery there than we see here in California.
