Not sure...

Kinda looks fun... but I think would be limited... brushy creek fishing would be hard... and I guess you could twitch small streamers...

but I I know a number of places that the rod coud be fun... 12 foot ultra light!

Water looks familiar...

I wonder how it would work highsticking a nymph rig with a shot.

Yeah, I first heard about tenkara fishing about a year ago and tied up some tenkara flies even. It's certainly an interesting form of fly fishing but I've still not decided to commit to buying a rod as yet. :?
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

marketing hype... I see no advantage over a conventional rod at all.

Sure, it could work a few places... but not any better than an 8' fly rod.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

I didn't really see any advantage over traditional fly fishing. I am trying to figure out the statement about casting 25' to 30' across the creek that would be fairly impossible to do with a traditional setup. It would be handy to carry on a back packing trip.

Then again I am up for any fishing that involves a fly.

I think that what they were basically doing in 'casting 25' to 30' across the creek' was long distance dapping. That would certainly be impossible with standard gear. And for that purpose, I think, the tenkara rods are interesting. That said, only a few of the creeks I fish are open enough to use it. So many creeks are smaller and/or overgrown that it would not be of any help.

At 2:35 of the video. "I can spend the whole day....just fishing". Duh!

I'm a sucker for just about anything fly fishing.....but I don't know. Every time I picture a collapsible fishing pole, I hear Ron Popeil's voice pitching how great it is. ;) I too wondered about the comment of impossible to make that casts across the creek with a normal fly rod. :? There's a little known thing called a rollcast that could pull off such a difficult thing. The secret society of high stickers would be the only ones to pull off the cross creek drifts. ;)

From a purely traditional technique perspective, I think it's interesting. Being superior to others for creek fishing. Nah. I do think dapping has it's merits for creekin', and this would certainly be something Tenkara excels at. The thing that sticks in my mind as the most important, "a simpler style of fly fishing". I get too wrapped up in the latest and greatest. Tenkara is close to a cane pole and string.

The simplicity of it sounds nice. Now, make tenkara style rods, collapsable and no reel, in sizes like 6-9 foot lengths and it would fit more of the creeks I know. Creeks I already fish mainly with just leader ou the tip and dapping as the method. Not saying I'd buy, but at least the options would open up a bit more.

The tenkara flies I tied last year were along the lines of the 'Mutsu Morioka area' flies shown here, in the fifth section down:
http://www.amago.jp.lv/b-streams/flytying/tenkara3.html

I caught at least one fish that I could not get to come out from under his rock with anything else in my flybox.

Maybe I got sucked into this too easily, but I ordered one for Sherry and myself. I like the simplicity of what I saw and read about. *, it's only money, right? I bought the 13' rod and Sherry got the 12'er both in a 6:4. I'll post a report after giving it a try.

Rick -
I look forward to hearing what a fly fisherman from this forum has to say about them. Regardless of the fact that they're basically long light rods, I do very much like the idea that it's telescoping... I just want to see if they're fun rods or not. Maybe someone can do some tenkara czech hybrid fishing ;)

Mr.Fiske..

That hybrid style is exactly what I had in mind... with a soft action 13 foot rod... that might be a lot of fun.

THe price is right.. cant wait to get a report on how it worked...

We should get them Monday or Tuesday and hopefully I'll be able to get out on the water locally on Saturday. Sherry has a fractured metatarsal bone in her left foot so we've been staying home and not getting out on the water. Maybe I can get out by myself for a few hours Saturday to give it a try. I hear it takes a bit of practice to get the hang of the cast, being a bit different from a fly rod, but it sure sounds like a fun way to fish. I was thinking too that it might be a good way to czech nymph with small flies. It's worth a try.

Got our new rods in the mail today. This expands to 13 feet. The tip is very small, less than a 1/16 of an inch and very sensitive. I'll be heading up to the WF on Saturday to give it a try. Hopefully the water temps wont be too high in the morning.

That looks like a lot of fun!

How does the line connect? Easy to do?

Could you try high sticking a double nymph set up?

If it works well with that type of rig... would be a lot of fun to fish the pocket water on the Kern or anyother pocket waters..

I'll post a link about how the rod is set up, leader and line. I explain it as Tom Sawyer style setup though it's pretty much the same as a regular setup for a fly line, loop to loop, etc. High sticking is pretty much how I understand you fish Tenkara Rods on creeks and small streams, but I think I read on the Tenkara forum that one guy used it tubing. On a stream you only have a small portion of the tippet on the water and the rest of the line and rod make a nearly 90 degree angle from the water to the handle of the rod, if you understand what I mean.

Is that a warning label on the rod? :?

"Warning, extending this fishing implement can put your eye out" Or maybe... "warning, this item can cause you to lose focus at your workplace, and spontaneously yell out, fish on!"

;)

By the way, I recently purchased a switch rod. Not the same as Tenkara, but high sticking and getting longer drifts is one similarity.
