Trying out a new 3wt

Postby highflyer » August 12th, 2009, 9:16 am

I have been looking for and dreaming about a new 3wt for many months but have not done anything about it.

Well, I found a new 7'9" 3wt, 2 piece at a local shop. It is a Sierra Classic custom rod with no builder name on it. The salesperson said it was built by a local rod builder. It has a very nice reel seat (Lion's Blood Burl ? - & silver), ceramic guide insert, very clean cork handle, and a fast to med fast action. The price tag shows that they are discounting it substantially from the original price making it really attractive to me. PM me if you'd like to know the price.

Does anyone know who built this rod? It seems beautifully made with a brown blank and brown winding - consistent size and shape...nothing fancy like feather insert, etc.

I'll be casting it next week.

Any comments? Also, if I get it I'd like a neatly balanced reel for it. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a nice rod if you're looking for a 2piece/don't plan to backpack with it - which for me is a dealbreaker, but not for everyone.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Interesting. If you buy it, let us know how it fishes.

I'm not much for rod & reel "balance". I tend to go light on every reel, unless it's on a 8wt and up....I still try to go light, but drag performance weights heavily on bigger reels. With that in mind, I like Orvis Battenkill BBS, or CFOs. I have a Ross Evolution on a 3wt, that's nice, but pricey. I also like most of the lightweight Lamson LA reels.
