Local fire

Postby rkfiske » August 25th, 2009, 6:44 pm

Watching the news and also checking out my windows shows me a very concerning image. Part of the canyon on highway 39 near morris dam is on fire at the moment and creeping up. I'm hoping this fire will be dealt with and contained as fast as they can but that's alotta dry brush up there.

I saw the smoke on my way home from work about an hour ago, and without knowing any of the details, I guessed it was up 39 way. That's not good.

This is an update from wildlandfire.com,

I'm really depressed about this. Read a group of 18 boy scouts were pulled out of their camping area near the BTNW. Last I read the fire is 10% contained... :( :( :(

I don't have a clue where this area is without getting out a map, but for those of you affected, directly or indirectly, I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

San Gabriel Canyon, as is WF San Gabriel and EF San Gabriel.

I think I saw wildman being interviewed on the 11 o'clock news last night. The started fire low in the canyon hopefully it will not get into the watershed.

Here is a link to the Morris Fire on wildlandfire.com, a website we monitor at my station. The site is generally more informative than the news, we get a good laugh at those bozos trying to report on fires. So far my department has sent two strike teams of five engines each up to the fire. I was hoping our engine would go but not this time. So I finished up my shift this morning and get to come home for a breakfast beer. Unless they call me back in, like last week.

Information only, there is another fire burning in the area called the Station Fire, reported at about thirty acres and growing. You can find information about the second fire on that website if you look in the Initial Attack section of the forum under the Hotlist tab.

Assigned to the Morris Fire as a public information officer. We are on the downhill slide and will be wrapping up next week. Fire got into the San Gabriel near the dam (San Gabriel Dam) but did not move upstream above the resevoir. Staying at Santa Fe Dam park and they are having 18,000 folks here for an all night fishing derby as well as our fire camp. Interesting stuff.

I brought the fly rod but haven't had time to try my luck in the lake. Will be a long and hot fire season. Be careful out there.
