Holy Moly! As we flew into LA on tuesday, we could see the smoke starting in AZ. As we came into the basin, it was pretty ugly. A good rain sure would help.

makes the handful of guys riding around in the little red trucks seems pretty insignificant in the face of natures fury.

I was thinking the other day.... I wonder if by putting out all the little fires each year, we actually set the stage for these monsters...


you know... if we let them burn... over time, there would be a LOT less fuel... if this area had been burned off in pieces over the past 5 years... this would not have happend the way it is.

Not so scary to me, but at that speed it looks more like a volcano erupting then a fire.

Crazy stuff indeed! I posted this under the Smoke thread a few days ago.

Castaway...that has been the great debate for many years now in the fire community. Putting fires out immediately was the policy for many years but it was realized that fire is a natural process. Many fires are allowed to take their course, especially in National Forests. That is if they are started by natural causes, if the fire was a man made start then it is looked at in a different light. In the nearby Los Padres National forest, the Zaca Fire was allowed to burn for quite sometime in 2007, monitored by fire personnel of course. Using the existing fire they were able to utilize firing operations to burn off large areas, this also helped to corral the fire. Throughout the country prescribed fires are done to reduce fuel and create breaks to protect communities. In many cases, fires are simply put out do to a threat to people's lives and property.

And I can assure you, there are much more than a "handful" of guys riding around in little red trucks on this fire.

Just got released (temporairly, I think) from the Morris and Station Fire. The fire will change the way we view and use the Angeles National Forest forever. Fully one third of the Forest has burned. A number drainages that LA fly fisher folks enjoyed are very likely devastated. There are many still at great risk. As all have stated, this is a monster fire.

A metaphor that we have used as Informaton Officers is that most SoCal wild fires are like rainstorms. The Station Fire is more like a Category 6 Hurricane that is poised to strike. The energy being released by this thing is incredible.

Man I don't miss those fires. I remember when I had to evacuate I think it was back in 03 when I was living in Stevenson's Ranch.

Whoa crazy i couldn't escape guy's the ash and smoke i stood in Glendora during the fire and stunk up my truck like a campfire so sad to see our hills up in smoke time to burn these pyro's :fire back to *
