NorCal help!

Postby Rockstar Fisherman » September 30th, 2009, 2:50 pm

Ok, so Friday October 9th on our way up to Oregon my Dad wants to take a detour through Fall River Mills to play golf and look at some property. This gives me a window of opportunity to fish for up to 6 hours so where should I go and any tips on the following places for this time of year??

-BAUM LAKE with a float tube, either from the hatchery or from it's dam above Hat No.2.
-BURNEY CREEK in the state park.
-PIT RIVER: Is there any good fishing above or below Pit No. 1 or arond Fall River Mills???? How is Pit No.3 this time of year, I have fished there before in the middle of August and it was nice.
-Horr Pond or Big Lake, I know very little of these 2 waters.

Hat Creek (No.2) is out of the question because I hate that over rated creek, as is Fall River because I do not have a raft or pram of some sort, and for my time limit the Mcloud is also out of the question.

Any help would be GREAT and PMs are more than welcome. I'm leaning towards Baum Lake because it's the only water I somewhat knew how to fish 7 years ago as a beginner fly fisherman, and would like a nice big brown now that I know how to fish lakes 100 times better than back then.

Thanks, Mike

I'd fish Pit #3 of the options mentioned, but don't sell Hat Creek short. It can also be good in early October. Best would be the McCloud, but with only 6 hours, you wouldn't get that much fishing in when you factor in travel time.

If I had the time I'd definatley give it another chance, but that area has always left me disappointed, never seen anything caught or in the water larger than maybe 12". It is a beautiful creek in that section though!

Its been years since I was there so I iht confuse the names...

But the little cannal/creek that runs from Baum lake down to the first pump house... and at the bottom of that pump house I remember doing very well there... nothing huge.. but lots of fish.

also I remember something called the "bathtub" stacks of very large fish... down a dirt road but I cant remember where it was... maybe a local fly shop?

Do you have 6 hours to fish, or do you have 6 hours to drop off your dad and then return to pick him up??? Makes a difference!!!! All your options are good, but a word of caution regarding Pit#3; the road is closed at the dam and you need to walk about 1/2 mile to access the river. New construction has the Pit #3 & Pit #4 roads all messed up. Check with Vaughn's in Burney to find out which roads are open/closed.

My Dad is dropping me off and picking me up so yes 6 hours of fishing. I did just read about the construction and detours for the Pit so I'm almost certain that Baum will be where I go unless I hear that one of my other ideas might be better. I'm really wanting to tangle with some of those big bows or browns. I used to fish it yearly for about 4 years till I quit going up in that part of the state annually. But back then I was pretending to fly fish and it was always in August.
