Line Storage

Postby FlyFlogger » October 14th, 2009, 7:09 pm

Hello all,
I have a few lines on my fly reels that don't see alot of use, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. With lines costing what they do, I would like to have them last as long as possible. I am thinking of removing them from the reel and storing them loose or on a large diameter spool or ?? to reduce the coiling of them. Does anyone do this that could give me some suggestions? I have a few spools that the line originally came on when I bought them, but don't know if the diameter of the original plastic spools are the correct diameter, or they are cheap for temporary use until the line is sold. I've seen a winder and storage system at Cabelas, but not sure how it works. Thanks for any help...

Storage of line on the spools that the line came with is a good idea. Clean the line before you store it, and make sure you label the ends if it is a WF line. If you need a new line, Rio ST 2 is on closeout right now for $30. It is a steal at that price. I try to buy all my lines at discount and store them till I need them.

Go buy little plastic buckets at the home store (used for painting). Strip the line loosely into the buck to the backing. When ready to use, just attach then reel as normal. Only need to mark one end and this is an easy way to store without any coils formed from a spool of any. Not perfect I'm sure, but this is how I do it.

Better idea: Fish them more.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

It would be a good idea to store them in a dark, cool place. Closet, or a desk drawer works.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, and I agree. Using them more would be the best way to keep them in shape
