The Best Trout Rod

For topics that don't seem to have a home elsewhere.

Interesting. From just doing a quick read of the posts, it seems that a 5 wt. is the go to rod as the "If I only had one rod" scenario plays out.

Guess I better build myself a 5 wt. Bamboo go to rod. WooHoo another excuse to start shaving the boo.

I'm with Dean on this one. You can substitute any travel destination that has big fish for Baja though!!! :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun:
From Bob, who saved sevral people's butt on his recent trip to the 'Pak in AK because he had spares available when they broke their rod :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse:
Why someone would spend that much money on traveling to an out of the way destination and not spring a few more clams for a spare is beyond me!!! :fireangry: :fireangry: :fireangry: :fireangry: :fireangry: :fireangry:

I'm right there with You Bob.... Why Folks would only bring one rod (and reel for that matter) on a Once in a Lifetime Trip (or a Regular Type trip for that matter) just makes me scratch my head in wonder... heck, the trip to the Kern the 9th thru the 12th I'll have 2 4wts. 2 5wts. & 2 6wts... One just never knows when all * will break loose and snap a rod.... 8-) ;) :D

Bob, do You Charge a "Save Your unprepared butt" tax when you loan out a rod from your Quiver to someone?????  ;)

Ok, ok. You guys can't leave the house without a full selection of rods....and, no doubt reels. It's probably something years of therapy wouldn't cure.

But who wants to be cured!! :bananadance: :bananadance:

I can think of only one river I go to, that I bring one rod. That's my home river, and it takes me all of about 12 minutes to get there. If something happens I can go home to get a spare. I do take 2 rods on occasion, but it's a river I know well, and I usually know what i'll be tossing, so I choose the rod accordingly. All my other fishing requires alternate rods and backups. That can be 2-6 rods, with reels. Thank goodness I haven't reached the depths of depravity like Bob and Mike, but it's always good to have something to strive for.

But, for the majority of my trout fishing, I use a Sage XP, 905-4. IMHO, it's "The Best Trout Rod". ;)

OK, let's see. BriansII, you're weird. I'm still never ever going fishing with you after youtube but I would say a Sage, yes Sage, 9' SP 5wt! You guys that tout the ZX or ZXL, how do you throw tons of slack that the Hat or Fall requires? How about the Missouri? OOH, just typing that gives me GOOSEBUMPS! Actually, I'd say the BEST rod for those conditions was Sage's 9' 5wt GFL from '81. Come on, those in the know would say" Dam, that idiot is right!" How about it midger? kg? 209er

Contrary to popular opinion Dean, I'm actually a nice guy!!!!! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
I felt sorry for those poor ill equipped fools sharing the one remaining rod in the boat while dumping $4K apiece to fish AK so I actually told our guide to drive us over and I'd lend them one of my "extra" rods so they both could fish at the same time. I'm such a sucker for a sob story, and no fee was required!!!!! Oh well, at least they brought me a beer back at the lodge!!!! :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun:

I think the dudes might have been related to "Seven Flies"!!!! :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance:
Only two rods for two dudes dropping $4K a week to fish AK!!!!!!! Man, those dudes musta been smokin' some good chit when they packed, but they sure didn't share it with me at the lodge!!! Good thing the lodge had loaner rods for the rest of the week (did I mention they broke the rod the first day????) so I did get my rod back at the end of the day!!!! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

I was begining to think that you needed to pay some $$ and get some help :comfort: !!! But after reading further on I see that bringing all those extra rods came in handy :stupid: . Sooo you're either still crazy and need help or have been around awhile and know how to prepare :D :D :D :D

How do you even pack for an airline flight 16 rods, reels, and spools, 1 8" PVC pipe that's 6' long???? Thats not even including other accessories and everything else you need in general...

The best rod is the one I dont have.. and the auction ended 10 min. ago... and it was a really good price.

This rod is for sure on my radar... I will never buy it new... but would love it if some one knew something about it

Lotsa people think I need to pay for professional help for lotsa reasons!!!!! :booty: :booty: :booty: :booty: :booty: :booty:
There are a wide variety of luggage products available out there today to travel easily with all the equipment you might need. Mine just happen to be made by Orvis :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse:
I typically carry an Orvis Safe Passage Carry On that holds six rods, six reels, and any additional stuff I need. In addition I carry an Orvis Backpack that has provisions for two rods. That's eight rods and all it's stuff in my two legal carry-on pieces. Chris carries the other eight as part of his carry on. Voila, 16 complete sets of fishing tackle capable of handling any finny creatures we may encounter! :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance:

No, I understood you Bob, Bringing You a Beer is Taxes paid in my Book.. it's the Kind Thought that counts....

You should have seen the Numbnutz in Loreto 4 years ago.. they came down there to target Dorado to 60 lbs. with one rod each.. and , here's the Kick, The Rigs were 8wts.!!!.. I watched them out on the DoDo grounds one day.. they'd hook up and then do the "Orvis Pose".. with their Rod tips way up high, trying to stop that first Insane Run on the Dorado... I explained to them back at the Desert Inn that Afternoon that they need to leave the Trout frame of mind at Home... Cause they'll certainly get to watch their rods explode from that Lame practice... It was their first time down there, their first foray on the Ocean... I explained that when their rod broke, they could go rent one from Pam at Baja Big Fish... Which the Next day they ended up having to go do... :? ;)
