Lack Of Advertisers in Latest Fly Fisherman Magazine

Postby NorcalBob » December 2nd, 2009, 4:04 pm

Just got the new issue of FFM in my mailbox and was surprised at how few pages there were in this issue. Definitely skinny!!! When I opened it, I found out why. Advertisements are way down. Not a single ad from Sage, Simms, Orvis, Scott, Rio, Redington, etc. HMMMMM, that does not sound good. :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I'm not too surprised at the lack of responses good DR. More doom & gloom is not a bunch of fun to talk about. I personally think the economy is starting to turn back up. I base this on only one data point, Chris finally got a real job after graduating a year and a half ago, as a Field Biologist Tech. And that means hopefully, that hiring for jobs every where is going to increase, which in turn will help jump start this sick economy. I just hope more local fly shops can survive until people start spending money again. But the fact that not a single major FF vendor has an ad in the leading (IMNSHO) FF mag is quite startling and sobering.

I've been thinking that a big part of it is, maybe a lot more fly fisherman are busy scouring the internet for deals.. I know I'm guilty, sucks and I know it's part of the demise for Buzz's here in Bakersfield. But for the major companies not to be advertising in magazines is odd to say the least.

I do agree that the economy is definately a part of this problem as well, but I think online shopping is a cause too.

i think with sale's down and money tighter, company's are going to use their addvertising budget's in a more targeted manner. now i'm just a dumb surfboard shaper, but i know that for me come aug/sept. i start to pay more attention to issue's of pointing dog journal and gun dog than issue's of flyfisherman, and my purchasing reflects that change in focus. like clockwork come january/feb. i start to think about what i need/want for the fishing season. i think that the no. of add's will bump up in the next issue.
my 2 cents- yes i think things will get worse before they get any better.the dow is forming another bubble, the gov. has been printing and spending too much money, and our fearless leader will do just enough in the stans to get more of our guy's hurt while he looks for the door. the bad guy's are going to go back to thier farms for the next 18 month's[ if they are smart ] and wait for us to claim victory and leave.
have a nice day !

I thought the same thing when I looked at my issue yesterday. Awful skinny. Seems like a lot of printed media is on the down turn. Not sure what will turn it around..........if ever.

I just want to let the fly fishing industry know, I will be making a purchase(s) in the next month or so. Please still be there for me!

I have the winter edition of The Drake and it has plenty of advertisements. As soon as I open the first page you get a full two page spread from Simms, turn the page and you get another two page spread, this time from Sage. Go on to page 7 and you get a full page from Smith Optics, pages 8 & 9 have a two page spread for Hatch reels & apparel. I could go on and on... I really have no clue what is going on with FFM, perhaps there sales department could not get any of the ad space sold, they may have dropped the ball so to speak. Or maybe the advertisers are noticing that FFM does not have as many readers as they would like so chose not to go with them at the present time. I don't know, maybe it is the economy and someone wanted to save on advertising. As it goes for me I would like to see more articles and less advertisements, but that's just me.
