Fly Fishing The Seasons

Postby briansII » December 15th, 2009, 4:12 pm

Besides the over population, smog, limited water, crumbling economy, and that we elect actors to run the State, we're pretty lucky to be Californians. Think about it............ok, think longer.

Let's try this again. We are lucky we can fly fish pretty much 365 days a year for trout and other species. We have native strains of rainbow, cutthroat, and Golden trout. We have viable steelhead rivers, with some wild fish still returning each year. On top of that, salmon, striped bass, large and smallmouth, panfish, and carp. We have surf and bluewater fishing. I'm sure I've missed many more. Not many states can boast the same list.

What does your fishing season calender look like.

Mine.
Jan/Winter. The finish of stripers, and the begging of trout season. I hope to return to a steelhead river this season.

Early to late Spring. Still fishing for trout, but stripers pop back up. Shad and the beginning of largemouth bass. The panfish ponds are warming. Looking to make my first trip for Lahontans.

Summer. Caddis time. Full on largemouth. Might squeeze in a striper trip.

Fall. Trout and LMB are a fading memory, and stripers are starting to dominate my thoughts. Always yearn to get on a steelhead river if I can swing the time.

Winter and 365 days later. I should have had a fun year fishing within the state borders. Somewhere during the year I would like to fish the salt, and try for a couple new species. Sure, leaving the State opens up a whole new world of fishing, but until I can manage to get the free time, i'll be throwing stuff at the locals.

By the way. Apologies for so many posts today. I'm home, caring for a sick 7 year old. :( One can only watch so many kid shows, before you have to do something else or go insane. :x

Summer time means tuna time! Yellowfin, bluefin, and the occasional dorado and yellowtail holding on kelp paddies. That's when the 30-50# rods and Avet reels come out to play on our multi-day excursions.

As screwed up as the state is and the attituded a lot of the locals have, I still don't thinnk I'll ever leave California cuz of the entertainment, weather, topography, and the fishing!!

December-April: Rainbow/Brown Trout, stripers

April-June or July in heavy snow years: Rainbow/Brown/golden Trout, carp/stripers

June or July-mid Septermber: Brown/Rainbow/Golden Trout/Brook Trout, carp

Mid September-November 15th: Brook/Cutthroat/BrownTrout, stripers

Species in order of what I target mostly. Of course rainbows and browns are always involved year round, but they're not my main focus at certain times. And in years like this year, I never even got a * golden trout cuz I never quite got around to it cuz I never fished the time of year I normally would go after them. If you haven't noticed I'm a trout fisherman LOL and still haven't caught a striper on a fly but I do attempt to.

A golden fishing state.

You can fly fish the surf year round and always catch something. If your dialed in you can capitalize on certain species becoming more active during the spawn like Halibut and slab sized (14" and larger) Barred Surf Perch. If your really dialed in that can also include local Stripers.

Summer time in S .CA is an explosion of options.
Some days it's a tough decision figuring out which way to point your rod. The Tuna are biting offshore, the tides are lining up for Corbina and then you hear the Yellowtail are boiling at first light in the local kelp beds. Inshore you have shots at Bonita, Barracuda, Calico bass, White Sea bass and Yellowtail all just a short paddle off the beach.

Crossing my fingers for a banner upcoming season with El Nino.

Carp have become my quick fix to any fish jonesing I may have.
Locally I've caught Carp in every month of the year.

All this and I get to chase Steelhead and Trout in the fall and winter. :)
Somebody just back of you while you are fishing is as bad as someone looking over your shoulder while you write a letter to your girl.
