Winter Method

Postby Bernard » December 23rd, 2009, 3:50 pm

This is meant to be both a tad tongue-in-cheek/humorous and also a sincere continuation of some of the local stream discussions from earlier this month. Basically, frustrated with fish hunkering down and not being too willing to move for a fly, especially a dry, I decided to go extremely deep. Split shot wouldn't do the trick but mother nature's granite "shot" worked fine. apparently the fish had no problem with the fly being just 7 inches off of the "granite shot".

Yes, you are correct, it didn't cast well at all. In fact, I didn't cast it at all. I just threw it.

Dude, I love that. Very intuitive.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

So you threw a rock and knocked out a 7" trout. Kudos Mr. Yin. And the Fly Fishing Guide of the year award goes too....

Too funny, Shane!

Bernard, way to solve the puzzle!
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Yes I felt very dirty! I have "sunk" very low hee hee hee ...

Thanks everyone for the well-humored slaps-on-the-back by the way.
Bob, Good question. The take was humorous. The rod went from serious bendo to slightly more serious bendo as I dredged the deep pool. The fish itself was sort of a negligible new piece of "drag" (lighting suddenly strikes me). This isn't the first time I have done this but it definitely is the first time on such a small local stream. Last time I wrapped the rock but didn't use a knot. The idea was to deliver a fly deep but let the rock naturally "unspool" from the leader and allow for a less encumbered retrieve. *The result was a solid brown* Gawd I can't believe that I am discussing the nuances of Granite Nymphing on Christmas eve.

Signed,
Feeling Dirty
