Think'n bout Lees Ferry

Postby fish-on-bro » December 25th, 2009, 10:10 pm

Might be going to visit my wifes Uncle in Flagstaff and noticed Lees Ferry isn't to bad of a drive. Read a little on the walk-in section and sounded pretty cool. Do you guys think it might be worth a day or two of fishing? I can't afford a guide, (that wont stop me) and was just throwing the idea around.

Totally worth it. Fish the walk-in early in the morning before the water comes up. I've done pretty well there right about this time of year on SJ worms, glo-eggs and little red midges. It's a bit challenging, especially once the water begins to rise, and what you can access from the bank (the left bank looking upstream) is semi-limited. There are lots of fish in there, though, and I found a few in places I didn't think fish would be holding.

Here is my report from last winter, but Chris and I only fished the walk-in for a half hour or so in the evening before renting a boat the next day and blasting upstream. Hope this helps!

River's running high but opportunities exist. Check out Wendy/Terry Gunn's report: http://www.leesferry.com/report/index.php

Fish it. # 18 zebra midges, SJ worms in as bright red as you can tie. As the fish move onto gravel, downsize your bugs.

email me- I will be around.

Merry xmas,

Also think glo bugs. The fish are on the gravel bars attempting to spawn from November though February. You can sight fish them upriver on the flats--not so much in the walk in area where the water is more choppy/riffly. Dress warm and in layers. It is cold in the canyon in the winterr.

LF Anglers has a good winter rate on rooms in the winter. Check their website.
