Fly suggestions requested

Postby Artin » December 27th, 2009, 5:30 pm

Hi all,

Hope all is well and lines are tight!

I want to get your input on a box of flies I am tying for my "Best Friend". It was his birthday Christmas eve. As I was trying to find him a gift to buy, it occurred to me...What better gift than a box of flies that will help him catch some fish!!! So I went by the shop today and picked up a box.
Now to fill it with some good stuff!

He doesn't fly fish much but our mutual friend and I have been trying to get him going....He has a rod and now I want to get him some flies....

I have decided so far to tie

Parachute Adams
Hares Ears
CDC and Elk
Caddis
Robo Pheasant tails
and
Zebra Midges
All in various sizes.

He fishes the Kern and Owens the most so I thought I would put together a box that would cover most situations.
I am looking for some input from you guys as well to see what suggestions you may have for Sierra waters other than the ones stated above.

I will post the completed box when it's done for you to see....

Thanks,

Artin

P.S. Wishing you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR AND AN AWESOME 2010 with nets filled with many large fish and of course GOOD HEALTH!!!

Artin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen the flies you tie. PLEASE tie some for him. Even if it's basic stuff like BHPTs etc. The flies you make for him will have more soul.

Artin
You know me you need to tie some Buggers and Leeches in Olive, Black and Tan
Maybe tie some Kern emerger
and the Christmas midge works very well on the Lower and Upper owens at this time of the year

Have a great New Years.

My choice would be for the traditional flies, 5 of each and in dark color, olive and tan.
Midges
Zebra midge in three colors: Black, olive and your choice
WD40
Red Squirrel Tail 16, 14
BWO 22, 20, 18
PMD 22, 20, 18
Royal Wulff 20, 18
Streamer Wooly Bugger

It has been my experience if a beginner has to many different flies it become overwhelming. It is better to have a few types he can recognize in the beginning than 20 he doesn't understand.

Artin,

Most of the scuds I have encountered on the Lower "O" fit into the size # 14, olive/gray category...Remember, they are most active at dawn and dusk ( when direct sunlight is off the water) and move in short, 6 inch bursts around submerged weed beds... Hot Creek is loaded with them too...Try some with a pink (yes pink - in the center) hot spot  ...Fish that one dead drift...

The FJunkie be right about 'dem Muddlers... fished those (# 12, on top) on a trib that dumps into a big lake one early fall day, with my evil spawn, and couldn't keep 'em off the fly. They are mistaken for hoppers...

My Kern River go to flies.....

They bannned dynamite on the Kern back around 1920. My dad has the newspaper clipping expressing the local outrage

Black Wolly bugger with a little flash
Flashback Pheasant tail-16-22
Yellow Sally Nymphs ...Solitude fly style
Parachute Adams with gray hackle and a trailing shuck instead of tail 16-22
H&L Variant or Royal Wulff 12-14
Elk Hair/CDC Caddis size 16
Green Rock Worms from tiny to huge
Tiger midge with back swept poly/krystal flash wing
Yellow midge with back swept poly/krystal flash wing
