Generic Frogs Fanny Floatant...

Another member reminded me of this stuff and I wanted to share this with you addicts...

It is a pretty good substitute for Frog's Fanny floatant. The product is called "Fumed Silica". I bought it awhile ago online for about $5 a quart. 1 quart should last you a lifetime.

It came in a plastic bag. Carefully poured it outside (windless day) into an airtight bottle. Use a funnel and refill the Frog's Fanny Bottle as needed. Be careful not to breath any particles in.

If you like the dry shake type powder like the Shimazaki Dry Shake, just add the "Activa Flower drying silica gel" from a crafts store such as Michaels. Mix 1/3 gel and 2/3 Fumed Silica in a film canister.

It's good stuff and much, much cheaper than buying the store brand stuff. When I got my bag a couple of years ago I filled the frog's fanny bottle I had been using previously, plus I also filled one of those small plastic containers that looks like a flask that you can get at REI and other stores and I bring that with me on fishing trips in case I need to top off the Frog's Fanny bottle, or someone with me needs some. The neck of the refill bottle I use is a bit smaller than the Frog's Fanny bottle so it's easy to shake more in their when needed.

The second link didn't work for me? Anyway, make sure that you buy the "hydrophobic", fumed silica. The non hydro silica is not a good floatant. Cab-o-Sil is one brand name for fumed silica. I believe there are others. There is a site out there that sells the right fumed silica, and it even mentions that it's popular with fly fishermen......but I can't find the site at the moment.

Brian, yeah Matt told me you gave him some. Figured it was the same stuff. No worries. My Frog's Fanny bottle is pretty new. Only had it a bit over a month. I'll have to order some at some point though. Great deal.

Mark gave me some of that stuff for Christmas a couple of years ago, I use it like crazy and have not put a dent in it!

The fumed silica is the same stuff I use. I ordered 3 gallons and should use it all by the mid 3000s--you don't use much floatant on nymphs and streamers--but with shipping being the same for 1 gallon or 3 gallons, I wanted to amortize my cost. Yeah, that's it.
