Fly Line Nail knot vs Making your own loop

Postby Hatch71 » January 7th, 2010, 11:33 pm

Guys I know many line makers now have loops. But I saw this video on youtube. When my line was set up it was done with a nail-less knot. Just wondering what you guys use. Thanks Chris

I love the nail knot for no other reason than ... hmmm tradition? habit?
This is a great video though and I admit, I am inspired.
Thanks

This was discussed not too long ago.

Personally, if a line comes with a factory loop, I use it. If it doesn't come with a loop, on 7wt and up, I install my own braided mono loops. 6wt and down, I do the nail knot thing.

I used that technique to repair a welded loop that was coming undone on one of my lines, worked fairly well

I nail knot leaders to fly lines, because I hate loops. I do a lot more nymphing than fishing dries, and typically tie a super tiny barrel swivel onto the end of my leader, which allows me to frequently change my tippet without shortening the leader, and splitshot placed above the swivel prevents weight from sliding down to the fly.

I bought a sink tip for my 7wt at the Spot, oh a bit over a year ago now. Maybe a little more. Anyway, Dean put a loop in the end for me. Differently than that video though. I think he used two nail knots to secure the loop, then coated them with knot sense or some other UV cure goop. Works great.

The method in the video looks good too.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Thank's, that is a clean and easy way to make a loop. I think I will give it a try. I just hope it does not sink out the tip of my fly line.
