top flies

Hey guys just wondering if you had 10 top dry flies and 10 top emergers for the eastern sierra what would they be. Im trying to get an idea of what to have in my boxes when i fish these areas. Im in the process of trying to eliminate some fly boxes and not completely sure what to have thanks for all the help guys tou guys are great.

This question has been ask so many times that maybe we need to make a permanent subject line with this information. I love this question! I am trying to cut down on the type of flies I carry. This is my list. It does not include midges, attractors, terrestrials or streamers. I know you asked for 10 each... but this is what you get olololol. I'd carry at the least 5 of each size, in all the colors you need. So I figure this list is around 250 flies... I'll stop there.

Dont take it personal. I do not fish drys flys so no help on that end

From the list that Arial and Jon suggested you can see that a lot of flies work there. The last time I was fishing the LO with 3 others was 2 weeks ago. We were all using different patterns and all were working and that was in the hard hit wild trout section.

I started tying flies and that opens a whole new world of patterns to use. If you’re like me you will make your own patterns based on what materials you have and what you see on the water. Personally I think trout are not too selective in the Eastern Sierra during non-hatch periods except maybe Hot Creek. If you put something in front of their noses and it looks like a natural bug chances are they will eat it. If a fly does not work then try another.

I carry boxes based on insects I expect to see on the water. One is full of midges, in all life stages. You can’t have enough midges, trout eat them all year long and in most streams they are the most common bug life form. I will tie a midge on first thing in the morning.

Mayflies are the next couple of boxes I carry. One for nymphs, some are attractor and some are more for the mayflies that are common on the water. Patterns for PMDs and BWOs work best in the waters of the ES. My other Mayfly box is full of drys.

These 3 boxes cover most winter fishing needs for me. Other times of the year I will carry boxes full of Caddis flies. One each for the drys and the other for pupa and larva.

I also carry boxes with stonefly and stimis with me at times. I guess you could get by with less, and on small streams you might just take a few patterns with you if you knew what type of insect were living there. I just feel more comfortable carry more flies rather then less.
