Braided leaders

Postby fly_baby » January 16th, 2010, 3:41 pm

Hi, I'm new to this forum so please forgive me if this question has been asked and answered previously. I bought an Orvis BBB I on eBay that came spooled with 3 wt DT SA Sharkskin line. A braided leader is attached using a nail knot (yay) that is attached to a Bimini tippet. There are 2 wind knots in the braided leader. Will the knots weaken a braided leader? Do I need to change it?

Thanks for your help.

Knots are usually your weakest link in the line, so I'd say knots will weaken the braided leader.

Been casting in the wind? If it's in the tippet put a new one on. If it's in the braided section, and that's not easy to do, get a new leader.

I've had my share of wind knots but I can't claim these. Looks like I'm going to put another braided leader on the line. Thanks for your help, guys. This forum is awesome!

Could it possibly be a twisted leader, and not a braided/furled one. If it's made from mono, with relatively evenly spaced, "wind knots", it could be a twisted leader.

FWIW, a wind knot/overhand knot in the thicker portion of a tapered leader is typically not going to be a problem. It may weaken the the mono in that section, but not to the point of it being the weak spot on the leader.

The line, leader and tippet came on the reel I bought on eBay. The looks like the Orvis braided leaders I have so I'm pretty sure that's what it is. The photos show the various knots in the leader and tippet. I'll rely on you fine folks to let me know if it's a bimini tippet or not.

This knot in the leader is midway between the line and the tippet.
