Depends on what you mean by "theres really nothing to do for the wife ". If your wife is interested in the outdoor sort of things there is more than enough to keep her entertained.

Whitney Hatchery
Laws railroad museum
Piute- Shoshone Indian Cultural Center
Manzanar
Plus alot more that I can't remember right off hand.

Of course there is always the casino for night time entertainment.

i guess it depends on what she like's to do. if she has an interest in photography there are ton's of opportunity's. there is an art gallery in town that is pretty good. give the chamber of commerce a call and ask them about what is available.
my wife really like's to just bring a chair and a good book down to where i'm fishing--she doesn't read the book, she just uses it as a prop. mostly she just sits there and watch's, making snarky remarks about my casting, and asks"why do you only pick on the tiny fish ?"
behind every proud married man ,there is a wife rolling her eye's. ahh, true love.
i'd call the camber of com. or some one at town hall to get the info. good luck.--mike.

You're not going to find many places where there will be a lot for a nonfishing spouse to do while the fishing spouse fishes. Either interest her in fishing or take trips by yourself. This has worked well for my wife and I for a good many years. I don't go to beauty salons, many shopping trips, girl's weekend at the river, etc with her, and she doesn't go to Bishop with me.

We tried the fishing part years ago. Not her bag, and one big rattler on the McCloud :o , and the rest is history.

If you go to a place like Mammoth (definitely over 4 hours from Bakersfield) she could ski, shop around town, and there are nice restaurants you could go to after fishing. It can get expensive though, as most resort towns are.

Good luck figuring out what works best for you.

You can probably find more and better fishing within 4 hours on the west side since that is where you are already located. I didn't see you specifically ask for east side info, but maybe that is what you are looking for. In any case, no need to cross the mountains unless you really want to.

There's always Reno. The Truckee is happening, and she could wander the casinos, while you fish. It might be a couple more then 4 hours, but it fits the bill for both of you to have fun.

Leave her home with the credit card and a BIG green light to go shopping or to do something with her friends. That way she won't ask you to go next time. Midger is right, you'll both be happier in the long run. Twenty years of marriage experience talking here. Take her when the weather is super perfect, no bugs are out, and have picnic...blah blah blah.

I take my wife to San Diego (4 hours from Bakersfield unless I-5 gets backed up thru LA). I fish San Diego Bay from my float tube and have a blast catching Spotted Bay bass and other salty critters. My wife enjoys walks on the beach and some of the hiking trails in SD County. My fishing is usually from 6AM until noonish when the wind starts blowing. I then have the afternoon and evening to enjoy the good life in San Diego with my wife.
Life is good. Eternal life is better!

what does your wife like to do? That'd help folks be able to make suggestions.

You could drop her off in Exeter to spend the better part of a day having lunch and wandering around antique shops while you fish the Kaweah R. up the road.
