Furled Leaders For Dummies

Postby briansII » February 8th, 2010, 4:35 pm

If I can do it.......

These are not trout leaders. While I have done one with very light mono, and i'm sure it'll work ok, I do not think they are meant for light trout fishing. This is a big game, big fly leader. I plan to use them this season for topwater LMB and stripers. For subsurface, i'll probably stick with straight leaders, since most of my flies are weighted, and turnover isn't much of an issue. Besides turnover, they act like a shock absorber. There is quite a bit of stretch, and snap back in the coils.

Neat...Like WAY easier/simple than furling... but I have to ask... why not just make the true furled (its not THAT hard... way easier than fly tying)?

I wonder how that hand-twisted leader compares to a true fuled leader in terms of memory (that's my favorite of furled leaders, they come off the reel and lay straight as can be.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Ray,

The ones I have, don't have much, if any memory. I just uncoiled one I made today. It had some curves, so I gave it a light tug, and it's straight. I've used Orvis leader material for a light one, and Trilene Big Game for heavy ones. I was given one made from Ande. It's kind of odd. All feel supple....more so than just a straight piece, and have little memory. You pull on it, and see the coils wind, and unwind, giving some shock absorptions. Do regular furled leaders do that?

Sounds about the same as a furled, memory wise. Furled definitely offer excellent shock protection.

I would be happy to make you a 5' butt section to try. I have a pretty good materials dialed in for trout rods, or I could try something else for a bass rod.

Cheers,

Ray
