Anyone own a St. Croix Legend Elite?

Postby Rob909 » February 18th, 2010, 12:15 pm

I'm looking to buy a new 5wt., and the St Croix's are more affordable than the other brands overpriced rods.

I own a 3 wt. Legend Ultra and I love it. But I'm wondering about the Elite.

I bought my 3 wt. blind without ever casting it, but I'm a little wiser now. Local dealers don't stock them to go and try one out.

So I was wondering if anybody owns one and what they think about it.

Rob doesn't Marriot's stock St. Croix? It's been several years but I bought one of the old Imperials there.

St Croix rods are great and have a cult following. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with negative thing to say about them. Plus they're American made. Oh yeah..my first trip out with my new Legend Elite, the wind blew over the rod as I slammed the car door and snapped it   $30 bucks and only two weeks later I got the rod back :comfort:

I own 4wt Legend Elite and 5wt Legend Ultra. The Elite is a super light and fast action rod that's is incrediby sensitive. The Ultra is a tad slower and more unforgiving and I've caught everything from 3 inch trout to 15lb salmon on it.
The 4wt Elite has been my primary rod and throw tons of line with no effort and will mend like crazy. It's so light!
My 5wt Zaxis can really fling the line but I just seem to like the St Croix better. They seem more alive. If you want a fast action rod go for the Elite but I wouldn't shy away from the Ultra. The next rod I buy will probably a 3wt Ultra.

I've bought my St Croix rods and Lamson reels from this shop. Anglers Habitat. Great people to deal with..and guess what they're just north of Boise. If you want to try it I'll be on the Kern March 12-15th.

Tom,
Marriott's doesn't stock St. Croix. They can order them, but they don't stock.

Shane,
I knew you owned a 5 wt. Ultra from a previous thread, but I didn't know you had the 4 wt. Elite. You told me exactly what I was wondering......if the Elite was just as fast if not faster than the Ultra.....and it sounds like it is.

I may have to just purchase the Elite and join you on the Kern.

Am I the only one that has days off during the week? All you guys that only fish on the weekends.....sheeesh! :) ;)

Definitely lighter and faster. Great looking hardware too.

I get every other Friday off :D

I saw some St. Croixs at Sport Chalet while getting some last minute tying material. I'm all for supporting the local shops, but they were on clearance. They were obviously the lower end models, but I did wiggle one of the 5wts. May be worth a shot if you want to save the $. Otherwise, support the local shops...

Also, the Fred Hall show is coming up mid March. It's not a major fly event, but St. Croix usually makes a solid showing and has a nice booth with all there stuff. Would be a chance to try some out. Hit them up and see if they'll be bringing their fly rods.

Nope! I'm off every day except Wednesday and Thursdays.

I try to plan my trips during the week, or arrive Sunday, come home Tuesdays. Much less fishing traffic that way. Unfortunately some of my fishing friends only have weekends off though, so...........

Can't help you on the rod questions though.

The rods at Sports Chalet are lower end models. Old Triumphs, the new Imperials, and Rio Santos lines. They don't even come close to to either Legend Line. The Fred Hall show sounds like a good idea.

I'm off on Fridays if you ever want to get out and see what's rising.
