You know last summer we were up on the kern near the meadow and my wife snapped one of me hooking a small branch on a drift and I thought I nailed one!!! My "journaling" skills are terrible but as I am sure many of you do, I love to take a few photos. Those photos go into folders named by date and location on my computer. Sometimes I stuff a small note (word doc or text file) with a few notes such as cfs readings or temps. These folders become my "diary". One quick look at the photos and I am transported back to the time and place. I use these as reference points when revisiting locations year after year. This, of course, is an iffy proposition since our seasons are so erratic but sometimes a few patterns emerge. Oh and YES, I back the stuff up

I like writing fishing reports. If I was smart, I would copy and paste all my fishing reports(that I email to buddies), into some sort of file/organizer. It would not be in a journal format, but all/most of the pertinent fishing info would be in there. Since I'm not smart, and lazy too, I don't have easy access to that past fishing info.

For over a year, I made entries into a hard bound cigar journal I bought. I was on a mission to try new brands and sizes. I wrote MANY entries, with tasting notes. After a while it became tedious, and too much like work, so I quit. Not sure I can even find the journal anymore. I imagine a hand written fishing journal would be much the same for me. A pc based one might be ok.

the bright colors castaway came from experiments to see if wearing such stuff really scares fish as many authors and others have claimed. first color i tested was wearing a hot pink shirt. it instantly scared off fishermen. no more getting crowded, pinched, etc. they avoided me like the plague with a real bad case of breakfast burrito gas.

chorme was the last and brightest color i thought of to test. turns out its the best 'camo' one can wear on the stream..if one is into that. it blends in with all light conditions unlike the mythological stuff we've been fed over the years regarding earthtones to 'blend into the background'. trust me..fish see ya regardless of what you wear. the material is breathable too. on a hot day i dont wear a shirt underneath it. with a slight breeze, its like having a mini air conditioner around you. same thing with the pink jacket/vest.

bottom line. wear what you want..the fish really dont give a rodents rear...

That is too funny! Your not the only one to do such a thing - A good friend of mine, and a member of this forum has been known to sport tie-dyed shirts on the water... just to make a point!

So (to stay on topic) - make sure to document what color shirt in the journal.

Hopefully he will post the pictures of him in tie-die, holding a 20" trout...

i looove tie dye..even had a shirt made up with pockets to hold fly boxes. goes well with my rainbow wrapped, and pink rods too.
next time you go fishing with your bud Randy in the fall..see if he doesnt blend in better with the tree colors than the other guys..

A journal? I usually forget but I'm slowly realizing conditions change on any particular water especially during the summer months. I'd rather pat myself on the back for figuring something out than to read what to do. I know they're only guidelines. For example, I went to my favorite river for the third time the first of August and came to the conclusion all the trout went to graduate school on selecting dinner. In three days I hooked two and touched one, very embarrassing in anyone's book. When I left I realized what they wanted and what they wanted was partially decomposed trico imagos and caddi with the left wing missing. And they were rising all over! All the while millions of #22 pseudos were hatching and riding the flat waters of the lower Mo. No wonder they're so many, the fish don't eat um!! Oh, and those are dries only, nymphs would take them. That's what they said at Izaak's anyway. Btw, the food at Izaak's rivals excellent food anywhere!! 209er

I kept one for about 10 years, but then my wife started calling the numbers in it, chased me out of the house barefooted hitting me in the side of the head with an 8 weight, so I quit.

Seriously, I did keep one for years, can tell you what the steelhead/trout were hitting on the Klamath in 1984, what the water temperature and air temperatures were, what the accomodations were like and even who I was fishing with and what rod I was using and the type of fishing I was doing and what was caught. The only thing important was where I was, who I was with, and what we drank......I honeatly don't keep them anymore, but I do keep a file of pictures on my computer that shows the date, and the pictures tell the rest of the story, with even a water temp shot in most of them.
