Huge earthquake in Chile, tsunami headed to Hawaii

Postby Papasequoia » February 27th, 2010, 2:55 pm

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile at 3:30AM (that's massively larger than the quake that hit Haiti). There is now a tsunami watch out for Hawaii and then later Australia, NZ, etc. Dave, I think your dad is still down there? Please let us know when you hear from him so that we know he is safe. Thoughts go out to him and all of the others affected by this.

I survived the tsunami when it hit Dana Point. Some of the docks and the Harbor patrol boat did not fair so well. It was an amazing sight to see the power of something that happened half way around the world affect our local waters. Here is couple of links; first one is best, check out the Patrol boat trying to move up stream. It has two four hundred-hp engines and he has it wide open! During the peak flows the patrol boat was unable to move up stream and broke a drive shaft and ended up on the rocks.

Papa, Just picked up my Dad from the Airport today.. He said he never even felt the quake (he was 600 miles south of the epicenter) and only wanted to talk of the 10+lbers he latched on to with giant Rhino Beetle flies... He said Santiago airport was very interesting two days ago though with displaced Chileans heading out to stay with family...thanks for your concern! David

Glad to hear that he is safe and sound. Jealous to hear that he was catching 10 pound trout. Thanks for letting us know that he made it out ok! Jon
