An interesting article from Alaska.

Fisheries Board bans anglers' felt-soled boots

JUNEAU, Alaska - Alaska anglers will be banned from wearing felt-soled wading boots in streams and rivers starting in 2012 under a decision by the Board of Fisheries.

The ban is aimed at preventing the spread of disease and invasive species.

The board voted 6-0 in favor of the ban Friday in Anchorage.

Anglers wear felt-soled boots in streams to help their footing on wet rocks.

Trout Unlimited pushed for the ban. Project director Mark Kaelke (CAL'-key) says felt stays wet longer than rubber boots and carries more river sediment.

He says invasive species can survive on felt while boots are transported to different fishing grounds, creating the potential to spread disease

The Fisheries Board has jurisdiction over anglers only and the ban does not apply to other stream users.

So does this mean rafters, sightseers, miners, etc can still wear felts in the rivers, but just not anglers? Funny ruling if that's the case. I raft and my neoprene boots I wear have felt soles. I also wear these same boots when I wet wade and fly fish, so guess I could wear them rafting up there still?

Would it be ineffective if the rule only applies to one group and not another, which use the same waters.
If "only" fishermen are stopped from waring felt then the people that raft and engage in other water sports and activities still jeopardize other waters... how does that make sense? :oo:

Why don't they just ban the thing all together.

Funny, but I read the subject line as "Alaska Fan Belt" and was expecting some joke/picture of a piece of Moose Hide or something being used as a fan-belt in a car.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.
