Fish ID help please

Postby Papasequoia » March 23rd, 2010, 9:53 pm

My nephew sent me a couple of pictures of fish he caught back east and asked for an ID. I'd use google, but with the colorblindness I can never be sure I have a match. I think one looks like the crappies we used to catch years ago back there, but it has been decades and I'm not sure, any help on an ID would be appreciated, thanks!

Jon, the first is a largemouth bass, the second is something from the minnow/chub family.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

I'd agree 100% LMB on the first photo, second photo could help you one bit!

Well boys I'll play. What I think that second one is right there is what you call a Notemigonus crysoleucas or Golden Shiner. I whipped out the old Audubon, forgot I had it!

Well there you go ryan, busting my bubble... At least I was right about the family...

cyprinids (Carps, minnows, chubs, etc)
Subfamily Leuciscinae – chubs, daces, true minnows, roaches, shiners etc.

The bass could be a spotted bass. The jaw on a spot doesn't extend much, if at all, past it's eye. A largemouth jaw extends past the eye. The way he's holding it, makes it tough to ID. I agree with Ryan on the second one. I've caught a golden shiner(on a dry fly) and it looked a lot like this one........I have a picture of it somewhere?

Looking at the dorsal fins on the Common vs. the Shinner I'd have to say the Shinner wins. Sorry Ray. ;)
