BTW, Chris is using the GPS unit to map salmon redds.

Of course I'm a proud papa, but just because Chris is in a few pics isn't the reason I posted the article. It's a great article written about some of the salmonid restoration work going on, showing what people are doing to actually help out fishies. Plus it has lotsa pretty pics (which I like!)!!!!!

That's been a very successful project. Well done, Chris to you, and your fellow team members. It's good to see some positive fishing news.

You should be a proud dad, Bob!!

That's awesome. I think that most fishermen would respect the warning sites and not wade.

I saw something cool on Putah Creek a while back when I visited it for a day just to check things out. They had done surveys and marked the redds with neon pink strips to mark most of the reds which gave me a visual of exactly where the redds were. I thought that this was cool. I don't know how effective this would be if the fish constantly move around and make new spawning beds. It may not be efficient unless the fish use the same areas over and over.

This was a good story to read and learn from in the midst of all the negative things that we usually hear of.
Thanks for the report.

Very cool. Nice work. I can't imagine how proud you must be.

I did a lot of this type of work during and after college, with non-profits and DFG- Spawner surveys (counting redds, carcasses, etc), snorkel surveys, downstream migrant trapping, electrofishing, etc. etc.

The "flagging" is used to record the location of redds, so that they are not double-counted the next time the surveyors walk through the area. Typically, the female will build the redd and dump all her eggs into it when spawning with a male. Then they die. They tend to no move around or create more than one redd. There are such things as "false redds" where the female has scraped away at the rocks and for whatever reason decided not to spawn, was eaten by something, died in the process, etc.

Question for NorcalBob, who does your son work for?
