Southern Steelhead Research Project

Postby anacrime » May 6th, 2010, 10:08 am

Howdy Fly Fishers,

I'm thinking of doing the final project for my watershed class on Southern Steelhead. I'd like to focus on the history of the fish, past/present poor watershed management practices, an overview current restoration projects, the economic and intrinsic value of the fish, and a few of my own ideas.

I was hoping you folks could link me to some resources that I might be able to use. I have a few already, but I'm sure some of you have stuff archived / saved that isn't easily found via Google!

Thanks!

Shane

I've got a 1992 book by Behnke that covers native western trout, including a bit about southern steelhead.

Email me your address and You're free to borrow it (unless Justin still has it).
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Shane, I can't offer any specific info on steelies, but I did a couple papers on fishing related topics for my Environmental Studies class. Don't be afraid to call people in the government offices and start by saying you're working on a term paper. Everyone I spoke with was super helpful. I had 1000 page EIRs shipped to me, guys who met with me at the DWP to share info and reports. All kinds of stuff. Our tax dollars pay for these guys to study this stuff and it's all available, you just have to ask.

Solid advice, FlyinFish. I was gonna wait a little bit before I start calling folks. I want to have something concrete down on paper and narrow my questions down.

Shane#2, THANKSTHANKSTHANKS for that PDF! So good!

But soon, I hope, I can return to the woods.

Did you get this email from CalTrout? Interesting.

Help Us Get the Facts Out about Steelhead Restoration

On April 25th many news outlets across the country and as far away as the UK ran an Associated Press story about fish passage and fish ladders in Southern California. While we usually welcome attention to this issue, this story was rife with inaccuracies and distortions and failed to acknowledge the positive benefits of such projects. Now we need your help to get the facts out!

Please click here to send letters to the editors in the news outlets in you region. We make it easy. Plug in your zip code at the bottom of the page, scroll down then select whatever local news organizations you wish to contact. You can send the email as written; edit it with your own words or with our bullet points; or write your own email.

CalTrout in partnership with the Environmental Defense Center, Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains, Matilija Coalition, Trout Unlimited and the Southwest Council Federation of Flyfishers released a point-for-point rebuttal to many of the news outlets that ran the story. But we could still use your help ensuring a proper telling of this fish passage success story.

If you have any further questions please contact our Southern California Regional Manager, Nica Knite, at (619)269-9207 or nknite@caltrout.org

Shane, Anacrime Shane that is, I hope you plan on posting your report where we can read it once you've completed it. I love reading about this mythical type trout that still exists in some of our urban backyards. Good luck on the project!
