Hi there folks! Just signed up today for the forums.

I'm a complete rookie to this addiction, (I'd call it a sport, but it looks like more of an addiction to me  ). I've been bait fishing my whole life, but have a friend who has been turning me on to fly fishing, and I'm just trying to get a basic understanding, and learn as much as I can before I go try it out for myself. Just from the few things I've read, I can tell I'm going to like fly-fishing a whole lot more if I ever learn how to do it the right way.

Welcome to the board, JonJon! You are correct, it's an addiction. The good news is that it's fun, you get great exercise, and fish beautiful places.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks!
I really don't know why I've never tried before. I already am an avid outdoorsman, and spend the majority of my free time exploring the local sierras. I've just always thought it was such a complicated process I guess, and have been afraid to attempt fly'ing.

What are some books you guys might recommend to get a basic understanding?

Welcome! Pull up a chair and warm yourself by the campfire.....oh, and the new guy buys the first round. :)

I think The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide is a good start.

The Curtis Creek Manifesto is a longtime standard.

For instant gratification, there are numerous fly fishing series on You Tube. Don't overlook learning fishing knots. There will be times you are using very light leaders/tippet. A good knot can be very important to landing fish, and saving flies from snags. Depending on where you live, one of the members here might show you a few tricks.....hopefully about fishing....but you never know with this bunch. ;)
