Brookie Wood Cut

Postby WanderingBlues » June 15th, 2010, 6:46 pm

I finally finished off a woodcut of a Brook Trout I started on about a year ago, but left idling in the studio. The weather has finally been warm enough to allow me to ink up the block and print. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to put together a portfolio for submission to a local gallery and want to know if you respond to it, or is it "Yeah, nice. Move on....." I'm still looking for a title as "Trout" is something I put on all my artist proof's. Suggestions there would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,
Curtis

Looks great to me, I love that kind of stuff. As for a title, if you don't think it's too corny, why not try for some Old English title like from Izaak Walton's time? The Brooke Trout: A Delight for the Angler with a Fly or something like that.

Wow I dig it alot! I agree with jon, perhaps an interesting ye olde english type title would be nice. How much do wood block prints sell for? I wouldn't mind one if you are selling and I can afford it! I'd love something like that for my wall! It's awesome!

Hmm, I like "A Brook Trout for Darrin". Very nice cut of my favorite trout species, Curtis. Nicely done.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

It's nice to see it framed, I remember it from your signature before. I absolutely love printmaking, took a few years of it back in college when I was a fine arts major. What kind of wood did you use and paper do you print on?

Depending on the kind of title you are looking for, I think using its Latin name would be very tasteful.

It's carved from Japanese shina plywood, which I prefer for detail work as it's virtually grainless and really holds an edge. I break from tradition by using both hand tools and a dremel to get the effect I'm looking for. From there, I usually print using a wet technique on Rising Stonehenge or similar watercolor paper with Akua Intaglio Ink. Fortunately, even though its small, I have my own press, so I don't often have to hand burnish anymore.

I like the latin name, as well as the Izaac Walton references.

Ryan, if you want to trade out some of your hand tied flies, I'd be content.

I think it looks great. As for a name, I think you should go with what your gut feelings say.....sans any spicy food. ;)

I think the print would add to any room or tying/fishing/man cave.

I agree on the title being the Scientific Name, its a very matter-of-fact print, and deserves a very matter-of-fact name.

REALLY nice Curtis. I look forward to seeing Brown/Rainbow/Golden varieties.

Curtis, that is really awesome, quite a talent, considering everything has to be carved backwards and you have to cut around what you want printed!
The detail is amazing, I can almost see the red and blue targets!

How about just calling it "Brookie" since that is the affectionate vernacular used for the more correct "Brook Trout', which is really a Char.

How much for signed copy, I have the perfect place for it!

I feel pretty special! This is on my office desk, I look at it several times every day, marvelling at both the artistry of its author and the beauty of its subject. Curtis' photo, mine too, don't do it justice.
