That fly guy.

Postby flyster » June 16th, 2010, 6:48 pm

I was wondering if anyone has met someone like I did this weekend. I was minding my own business on a nice stretch of pocket water when This fly guy comes stomping threw the river toward me. He stopped to ask me about how the fishing was. I told him I caught a few nothing to brag about. I was about to say what fly I was using when he cut me off and proceeded to school me on how the fish were taking only nymph with a 5x tippet which he considered super light tippet and the dry fly action was dead because he had tried a caddis with no luck. He then told me the countless number of fish he had hooked this morning using a nymph in the deeper pools. I have been around the river for a long time and I have seen them come and go but this guy really cracked me up. I should have been angry about the way he just stomped threw my fishing area but I'm have come to the conclusion that I fish to relax and have a good time and nobody is going to blow a good day on the water for me. So I asked "wow sound like you were on fire this morning how many have you caught"? He puffed out his chest and said "six!!" My reply was "six fish in a half mile of river is outstanding"!! I was going to keep probing him for more insight on the fine sport of fly fishing but I think I herd enough.
I had caught all my fish on a Caddis dry. 7x tippet, fishing the the pocket water. I had caught 5 fish just in small run when he ran into me. This fly guy has a lot to learn. Have you ever ran into "that fly guy".
" Boy it's going to be really hard not to do this again tomorrow!!"

It takes all kinds, Jon. I do enjoy the mix of folks that fly fish, even guys like that fly guy. I usually reply. "Oh really?" and try not to chuckle out loud. Over the years I have had some very interesting conversations with folks I met on the stream. It's part of the attraction to fly fishing.

Jon, that was me

Just kidding, but I do know what you mean. Thankfully the majority of guys I meet tend to be awesome people but there are a few that slip through the cracks... Once a guy actually asked me to leave as I was fishing his 'spot'. I asked him politely what made it his spot and he actually had the nerve to say, "because I always fish here". Most likely was doing it because I was young looking. It's okay though, I decided to stick around and watch him fish. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but this guy was pretty awful. Helped him free his fly a couple times from the bushes ;)

In the world of off-shore angling, he's simply known as "That Guy." I think he's "Fly Guy's" cousin. That Guy hogs the corner of the stern, won't budge when you are running down the rail with a 100# tuna on the line, get's so drunk he hurls in the bait tank and kills 20+ scoops of sardines (at $40.00 a scoop), and stiff's the crew on the tip at the end.

That is why (when it is possible) it is better to go where others are not willing to go........

Or next time "That Guy" bothers you just tell him to STFU.

I once met some * on a stream who was leaving Waterbottles (Ok, maybe only 1 nalgene) all over the stream.

No respect, I've probably only fished with him a dozen times since. What a *!

:D :D
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Ray, that guy must have no scruples.

That sounds terrible, Flyster (Jon?). I haven't run into people like that (yet, I guess), nor people who say I am fishing their spot. The worst that has happened to me is getting high holed or low holed, including by fly fishermen who should know better.

I did have an interesting encounter a few days ago. I was fishing a popular and very crowded stream and had caught a few fish. As my favorite spot opened up, I left where I was fishing to move upstream and fish that area. As I was walking up there, a young guy (compared to me, that is) stopped me and asked how I was doing. I said pretty good, and you? He said he had hooked two and lost them, then asked me if I thought he had enough weight on then he showed me his rig. I was surprised, because no one had ever stopped me on the stream to ask for advice before, so I just said that it looked like he had plenty and that I was using even less, then I showed him what I had on, and I went on my way. Maybe now that my hair is getting greyer I look like an expert or something.

Anyway, I don't consider myself an expert, but I did think that the way he was rigged up was not how I would do it nor how I've seen anyone else do it. He had on two nymphs, separated by about 2.5 feet of tippet, there was a split shot between the two nymphs, then another one above the top nymph by about a foot or more. This volcanically-warmed stream is running a bit higher than normal with runoff, but it is still fairly full of reeds, albeit with some wider and longer runs than normal. So, while perhaps a bit more weight than normal could be called for, I thought he had too much and definitely too much tippet between flies. But I didn't say anything. And I've been kind of kicking myself ever since then, thinking that I should have spoken up more. So, while "that fly guy" is a horrible example, maybe it is possible to go too far in the other direction. I wish now that I had said something to him. On the other hand, maybe that's the way everyone rigs their flies and I'm the one who's doing it wrong. Anyway, it's been bugging me and this post reminded me of the encounter.

PS For this stream, most of the time I rig just two bead-head nymphs 8-10" or so apart with no shot, especially if they are tung beads, or at most one shot about 8" above my top fly.
Nature always wins.

I met fly guy last year I think. Fishing down by the local meet up spot last year, I ran into a guy and we started to chat it up. He showed my his new trout shaped fish counter, very snazzy I might add, and told me about the brookies he swore he caught in this very creek. Needless to say, his comments made my week ;) Then again who am I to judge, maybe someone did some stocking of their own, I know Sheriff Joe and I have entertained the idea down here in a few choice San Diego streams...hypothetically of course.

Down at the beach I'm with a friend teaching him how to fly fish the surf.
That day It I was fishing conventional.

So another fly fisherman comes by and stops to compare notes with us.
He takes one look at my rod turns his back to me and starts talking shop to my friend.
He went on as my friend sat there and nodded his head. As soon as my friend could get a word in edge wise he told him he was a beginner and
then points over to me saying he's the fly expert.

Skeptical he starts in with where's your fly rod, followed by more questions. Have you ever caught a Corbina?
Are you on any fly fishing boards? I said yes plenty and yes. I introduced myself, he recognized my name from the board and suddenly I'm a stand up citizen.

I have never encountered the so called "know it all" on the water. I certainly do appreciate someone who will share the knowledge they have acquired over years of fly fishing though. I enjoy learning new techniques, there are still so many ways I could improve my skills in the art of fly fishing.

I don't mind sharing the little I know about fly fishing with someone who is willing to learn. Sharing knowledge is priceless in my book. If anyone would like to teach me more fly fishing skills, by all means be my guest, I'm like a sponge and will soak it all in.

Come to think about it, I have learned a little something form almost everyone I have met on the fly fishing forums and hopefully have shared some of what I know as well. We are always learning, well at least that's the way it is for me, always something new to learn.
