New Shady Rest Campground

Postby Jim T » June 30th, 2010, 3:40 pm

I'm heading up to Mammoth next week and would like to camp at New Shady Rest Campground.

However, while looking at the online reservation site many of the sites are shown as not available (X'd out) until Saturday July 10th. Some are walk-ins and some are reservable. Several have the one next door currently available.

I called the visitors center which manages the site and they have no idea why they are unavailable.

Does anyone know for sure why they are flagged as unavailable (maybe snow, damage, etc)?

Anyone going to be up there this week or weekend that can stop by and ask the host why they are unavailable or if we go up earlier in the week whether we can occupy them?

Jim

Good luck on that camp site.
Their reservation deal really sucks.
You can also try old shady rest as well.

I stayed at the New Shady Rest about a week ago, did not see any construction and there was no snow anywhere. I highly recommend site 133, very nice location with lots of space.

I think you can reserve in advance, so maybe those spots are taken for the whole period around the 4th. Also, make sure you pay for your time, because your site can be reserved out from under you if you haven't paid for your entire stay. It would suck to have to move your camp because someone reserved it before your camping trip was done.

Good fishing,

Thanks for the feedback.

There are only 4 sites available to reserve for our entire stay. I'm going to assume the walk-in sites are available if you show up before they show them as available and we'll pay for the entire stay.

John,

134 is reservable and available, did you happen to look next door to see what it looks like. We're going to have at least 3 tents, maybe 4.

JimT,

I'm guessing that 134 is downhill from our site, we were perched on a slight hill above the others, the road descends slightly as it passed our camp. If it's on the left or right side of the road, you should have a lot of space, since it is in a lower spot and the incline gives you room where they can't site a camp, the camp area levels out considerably too. Your probably closer to the water spigot and the restrooms a wee bit further than that. I'm guessing the odd numbered campsites are on the right, evens on the left. But maybe not.

On the other hand, if it's the site directly across from us, which I don't think so, it would be too small for 3-4 tents. That site is wedged up against the high spot that the road bisects and has a lot of uneven ground around it.

PM me if you want some tips, too.

John,

Thanks. It's across the road and to the right (viewed from 133). The driveway grade for 133 is described as severe and 134 is moderate.

That sounds like the site in the lower flatter area. Our drive wasn't that bad, you just had to start backing up into it from the sloping road. I just have a small truck, so not a problem. Have a great time and good fishing.

I prefer Old Shady Rest also, but there are other camping options available as well - check your PMs. Jon
