watch your step! YIKES.......video link added

So I'm hiking to a fishing hole and almost step on this.

Image

Literally one step away. Mr. Snake was laying across a boulder about 3ft dia. that I use as a stepping stone to "stay above" the snakes. As I parted the bushes to make my way I saw Mr. Snake and wow got a little scared. Tried to get a pic but he was blocked by some brush. I found a way around Mr. Snake so I could get a better look. Mr. Snake appeared to be sleeping and just warming up. I poked him with my fishing pole but he didn't seem too bothered and finally slithered away slowly. I never got a good photo of his head. I would estimate about a 3ft maybe longer rattle snake. Seen 2 in the last week.

Watch your step fella's.

here is a short video. Normally I would not bother these critters but this guy was laying right in the path hidden by overhanging bushes I thought it was better to move him along. Check it out scary....

Close call Andy! Glad ur safe, its that time of year unfortunately.

Southern Pacific by the looks of it. Great. Another snake sighting.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Pretty snake.

Funny how they like to use the one clear spot to step in. I saw this little guy in the only easy spot to step up the river bank. I tried to move it so I could pass, but it crawled back further into the rocks. I poked it to make it madder, then found a different path. With the river noise, and me being hard of hearing, I rarely hear them rattle.

Glad you saw it in time, Andy. One you do actually see them they seem obvious. However, they can so often and easily be missed. I was out at Millerton on Monday morning and even though a wading staff is not needed, I carry mine to beat the grass and bushes and to poke around any wood or rocks I can't get around without stepping on.

Nice pics, but don't take too many chances to get them.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

I walk a little slower during snake season that's for sure. During our last outing while we were walking I noticed DH head was on a swivel scoping out the area. I asked "what ya doing looking for snakes??". Andy turn to me with funny look on his face and replied "aren't you?". Be safe up there buddy.

Yeah, it's that time of year. On the last outing to Flinstone Creek a gentleman told us that a woman was bit by a rattler. Fortunately there was a doctor heading up the creek as they started down. He gave her first aid and when they got into cell range he called the hospital to tell them they were on their way and his friend was on call. She only weighed 90 pounds so they were able to carry her out. Be careful out there and like John said, walk slower. We carry our staffs too, just to beat the bushes also.

I can't wait for winter. At least the rattlers are sleeping and the bitting deer flies are gone than. :)

I know how that feels. I was scouting for ducks and felt something hit the back of my jeans in my calf area. I figured I kicked up a stick, but turned to look and there was a nice big rattler. You know, it didn't hit me right away, but about 20 minutes later I had to sit down as the close call hit home. It struck as I stepped forward and only that saved me.

I agree, watch your step!!

I hate snakes... I to have run into a few. Toby and I both took a snake avoidance class and it has paid off , so far he alerted me twice that there was a rattler near by. Be very careful out there.
