Anyone going to the SG cleanup this Sat?

Postby FlyinFish » July 8th, 2010, 11:01 am

Anybody joining in for the river cleanup this Saturday? Going to try to make it with the gf. May bring the rod to make a few quick casts.

Here's the email I got from the homie's at The Spot.

Come Join Us for:

A MAJOR SAN GABRIEL RIVER CLEAN UP

Saturday, July 10th, 2010
8:30 AM – Noon
Meeting Place: Rincon Fire Station
about 12 miles north of Azusa on Route 39, passed OHV area, on the right hand side

This is right after the busy 4th of July weekend. East Fork and North Fork: Lots of Trash Clean Up and Graffiti Ramoval

Be sure to wear: hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes (no open toes), shorts or jeans
We will provide: gloves, water, a light snack … and trash bags ;-)

For further information, please contact:
Angeles National Forest, Volunteer Coordinator: Lois Pickens (626) 969-1012
Fisheries Resources Volunteer Corps, West Fork Stream Coordinator: Rene Marquez (626) 334-2336

I don't want to commit and then not show up, I work nights and get off late. I usually go to bed about 3am. if I do show up, hopefully I'll see some familiar faces.

Sorry Andy, didn't see your post until later. Benny, no worries, just wondered if there would be any fishing buddies up there.

Ended up going and had a great day. The turnout was decent and some folks from the FRVC were there. We cleaned up a section of the NF and filled our bags quick. Hauling up the bags to the road from the creek sucked the worst.

It was kind of a weird feeling, as this was my first river cleanup. I guess you have to just disconnect yourself and focus on the simple task of picking up trash. The whole "big picture" philosophical stuff has to be left at the car, or else you will drive yourself crazy and just be so disheartened. I was amazed at how much FRVC does for our creeks and I will be emailing them to join right after this post.

Here are a few photos. Next time I'll try to give earlier notice and hopefully we can make a few casts after a day of volunteering. The gf came along on this trip and quite enjoyed the day and understood a bit more about what these special local creeks are that I keep ranting about.

Oh ya, one other thing... most of the trash was FRESH. As in, this hasn't been sitting here for weeks even. As in, volunteers come up here like every weekend and clean up the trash, and by the next week, it's all back. I did not know this and it was an eye opener.

And this is what it's all about.

Left the fish rising to go over to an AWESOME Shanghai style dumpling restaurant in Arcadia. The gf is now up for a SG run anytime.

Arvin, which place did you go to? Din Tai Fung?

Yeah the trash gets collected quite often. It makes me incredibly angry, it's probably not that healthy for me to be up there. Thanks for offering up your saturday!!

No we did not go to that place you mentioned. The food there is very bad. Do not tell anyone else to go there. I also here the line is usually out the door because people come to witness themselves how incredibly bad the food is. It couldn't be further from what it actually tastes like in Shanghai. Again, that is not where we went.

Dude, that's my pops in the first picture. He has the red trecking pole. I think #4 is Tom Walsh with the two trash bags, very cool guy. Ryan, Din Tai Fung is the best. The original restaurant is still a little better than Arcadia.

Thank You to all who helped clean up.

No way! Ya my gf and I chatted with him a bit. Super cool and he told us the funeral precession "it's the least I can do for my wife" joke, haha. That is indeed Tom. I shot him an email to see what I have to do next. I asked one of the other guys if he knew you but he was one of the San Bernardino guys so he didn't know the Angeles crew too well.

Hope to see you out there soon!
