What I did on my summer vacation (pic heavy)

You know what, I totally forgot about that. I wish I had remembered, I'm slapping my forehead doing a Homer (Doh!) Oh well. I thought about doing a float anyway as the best fishing in the area is floating the north or middle forks of that river, but in the end I just decided not to spend the cash. Oh well, next time.

I was kind of expecting it as I have also had some not so pleasant encounters crossing back and forth between Canada and the US in the past, but this time they were fine. Just asked about my bear spray and let me pass. Coming back into the US the guy was fairly gruff, but after a few questions (and checking the passports) let us pass. All in all not too bad, but the prices to enter the park in Canada were a lot higher.

Very cool cloud formations which we seldom see here in CA.

Yeah, those clouds were awesome, thanks for supplying the type of cloud- I was going to look it up as I was sure they had a specific name. It did rain more that night, and again the next day...and the next...and the next. Welcome to the Rockies in the summertime. I was missing our relatively drier Sierras.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Middle Fork of the Flathead (where we rafted/kayaked) is where they filmed a lot of the river scenes for the film The River Wild, the one where Meryl Streep is a river guide.

Jon
Loved the lake with the Cutts and Many Glaciers is one of the best sights I've ever seen. Great to see family getting to enjoy it. Thanks for the report.

That gets a nod for the finest report of the year. What an amazing family vacation. The trips, the pics, the fish; all were just awesome and I'm glad we had the chance to experience it with you. On the kayak (aka padillac, ducky, etc), those are about the most stable thing around. I've been running the Upper/Lower Kern, Kings, American, etc for a decade in mine and it's still going strong.

Now, about Ms. Horsefeathers........ And we want pics!

Quite a vacation. That is certainly some seriously beautiful territory.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Yeah, isn't it funny how no matter how well a picture turns out, it can still never capture the whole feeling. Perhaps it has to do with the lack of input from the other senses, but this place was 100 times better than the picture.
Another anecdote; as we were standing at the trailhead to leave, around 11AM (It takes a long time to pack four backpacks inside a tent in the rain!) a guy comes walking up the trail carrying an inflated float tube on his back. We chat a little bit and it turns out that he comes up to this lake regularly on dayhikes (keep in mind that it is a 12.4 mile round trip!) He reported catching dozens and dozens of large fish on the far end of the lake where the cascades enter. I wished him well and we parted ways - it started raining again as we were not far down the trail. Now there was an addict!

Great report, beautiful scenery, and I'll bet, good beer. I'd take the beer over Mrs Horsefeathers any day. A good beer lasts longer. ;)
