Wading Jacket

Postby Deserthunter1 » August 15th, 2010, 10:37 pm

Looking to get a wading jacket, considering a Filson or Cabelas brand. Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Frank

I just purchased a Patagonia Deep Wading Jacket on closeout for $150. If you are looking for a lightweight jacket that you can stuff in the back of your vest, this is one you should look at. Patagonia makes some of the best gear and they stand behind their product. When it is on sale, it is hard to turn down. I had a cheap jacket that soaked up water like a sponge. When it comes to raingear get the best that you can afford!

I have the Patagonia Deep wading jacket too. It's lighter then my SST, and stuffs easily. I have used it in big rain, and it's always worked for me. If you can find it on sale, you can't go wrong.

I had the non Gortex Cabelas jacket. It's probably changed since then, but....... After light use for a couple years it did not repel water well. I washed it and re-treated it with a waterproofing spray. It worked ok for a couple wet sessions, but it started getting saturated again. Not actually leaking water inside, but the outer shell held water and made the jacket heavy. The last straw was a steelhead trip. It rained off and on the whole trip, but the last day it rained hard. The jacket felt like I was wrapped in a wet blanket, and I was damp inside. Miserable. When I got home, I order a Simms, G3 Guide jacket. It's a little on the stiff side, but comfortable. It has tons of storage.....and I use every bit of it. Expensive, but worth it(IMHO).

I guess what I'm saying is, don't scrimp if you're going to be using it regularly.

I found a Simms rain jacket that had been on the rack in a tackle shop for several years ...picked it up for $125. It has worked great for me in the rain and cold.

Get the best you can afford.

I had a Filson shelter cloth wading jacket- I liked the look, but geez, it was hot, even in cool weather. Go with a breathable material.

Excellent advice, thanks. I was leaning towards the Filson due to the "Old School" style look but will stick with the current technology. Also look for the SALES!

Really depends how much rain and wind you will be fishing in.
as for the filson.. and no disrespect here... but even though it looks cool and i love the old school looks to it, i have to agree with others.. its just too bulky and way too hot hot hot.. used my brothers on a trip once and i about sweat to death and in really bad rain it didnt really hold up and retained a lot of water... but im talking major rain..

I think the gold standard for many years in breathable hard core fishing rain protection has been the SST jacket....for major coastal rain or alaska, I love my patagonia SST jacket, the thing is bomb proof!!!
I had the old version for something like 20 years and beat the you know what out of it, and its held up fine all those years.. pricey but has kept me dry and warm in the worst rain and wind you can imagine.
this winter i broke down and got the new version and it has some good improvements like a tighter wrist bands and a few other improvements but its just as bomb proof as my old one. I also use and love the patagonia deep wading jacket...when i need a lighter jacket.. its not quite as extreme as the SST and is much lighter but still a great dry jacket for most conditions.

for years i had a serious jones for the simms guide jacket, but 300.00 was not doable for me. the really nice thing about most of the industry is that sooner or later new models are released and the old state of the art becomes obsolete. i like obsolete, so i just hung around like a spider waiting for my coveted guide jacket to to fly into my web of cheapness, which it did and i jumped on it for half price. it's a great jacket, rain , snow , hail, perfect. you can't beat gortex for comfort.go with a proven material. pick your prey and wait'em out .

I had a Filson jacket but returned it after a few uses. The cuffs were cotton and soaked up water and stayed wet. It also had a weird lining that was always getting tangled. I have other Filson things like their small strap vest that I love and have used for a long time.

I have a Patagonia SST which will keep you dry and warm, but is a little too much if you want to throw it in your vest or backpack, so I usually carry a really lightweight jacket that I use for rain or wind.

Bummer, they're sold out of smalls. I tried it on in the store in ventura and I will say it is definitely cut short. My girlfriend said it made me look like I was trying to fit into a kids jacket :)
