The Situation
On August 23, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was petitioned by the Center for Biological Diversity and four other organizations to ban all lead in fishing tackle under the Toxic Substances Control Act. This includes sinkers, jigs, weighted fly line, and components that contain lead such as brass and ballast in a wide variety of lures, including spinners, stick baits and more.

I'd be OK with it. I still don't like the lead-free split shot, but I could learn to deal.

I'd rather see hook barbs banned though.

Another example of over regulation. This ban would presumably also apply to sinking tip lines and (for trollers) lead core lines. When was the last time you saw a bird die as a result of eating a fly line or lead core line?

On another fly fishing forum, I've seen support for the ban. I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I would urge people to look at who is pushing for the ban, and who oppose it. What are the end goals of each side. Also look at how deeply this ban will effect sport fishing as a whole. What are the effects of lead on the fisheries, and how far will this ban go towards a positive outcome. And in the end, who do we want dictating how we go about our sport.

I would rather not have things banned. If one wants to or feels it is better to use lead free split shot etc. They should feel free to do so. If one wants to use lead shot etc. One should be able to do so as well.

They should just remove all the lead from the earth and launch it into the sun. Then earth will be a much safer place for all life, as lead is bad. I wonder where all that bad lead on earth came from in the first place

I signed the petition... I hate the Center for Biological Diversity as much as I hate P.E.T.A. anything I can do to throw a wrench in their Gears and stop or at least slow them down I will do..


Lead comes from the same place all of We Humans come from... Space...

I'm curious. We are all worried about leaving the smallest piece of mono line either lying on ground or in water for many reasons, but are we worried about the thousands of little lead pellets we lose or drop onto or into our surroundings. Is it truly significant in both cases? The half life of lead is 22 years, a tin can decays in 50, monofilament 600) Of course you can't get Mono poisoning but they all do damage. Lead is so prevalent in our world (batteries, bullets, shot, solder, pewter, building materials) we must be surrounded by it. It's a created product of, some suggest, the big bang. I'm all for a ban IF there are suitable replacements for whatever the item is. Like most on the forum I'm for the least amount of government control.

I'm with you Rob, I stopped using lead shot Years ago and use Tin shot or Tungsten Putty, actually I prefer the Putty because it is soo much easier to customize for the Conditions I'm fishing in, plus when the Putty snags in the Cobble bottom, a slow steady pull of the flyline (Not with the rod tip) Will saw the leader right thru the Putty. I do not lose soo many flies... with shot I lose more flies because the leader always breaks at the shot.. But since I tye my own flies, I am not overly concerned about fly Lose.

I think with small amounts of lead dispersed over a large area, any large percentage of lead poisoning is greatly reduce.. it's like the DEET they use in many Insect repellents. I was told by a Scientist that to get serious Deet Poisoning a person would need to drink a 4 oz. glass of straight DEET.. Trance amounts really do not harm most people.. Mother Nature is pretty good at dispersing small amounts of any toxic substance until it's effect is almost non lethal... But One should always be cautious..

I've been of the Mindset that if groups like the Center for Biological diversity & P.E.T.A. want to really drive it home how Bad we Humans are for the Planet...

All Members of both groups should Commit Suicide, every last one of them, all in a Few Big Groups in the Major Cities.. They'll get plenty of Media coverage (which helps their Causes) and Folks will certainly be made aware of their Message and Mission..

Yes!!! I dare every Single member of Both Groups to Commit Suicide.. Lead by example, Show us the way....

This group is just plan crazy. As for PETA, well the last time I ran into them was at a Rodeo in Yucca Valley. The promoter had the Power of Attorney from the landowner to bar anyone he did not want on the property. The PETA Aholes would not leave so they were arrested for trespassing. When it was mentioned over the PA system that PETA had been carted off by the Sheriff deputies, the rodeo fans cheered.
