Tenkara Seminar

Postby RSetina » September 11th, 2010, 10:58 pm

Sherry and I attended a seminar put on by Daniel the owner of TenkaraUSA and Dr Ishigaki flew in from Japan to speak to us about the origins of Tenkara fly fishing, give a casting demonstration for those at the SF Fly Fishing Club, and demonstrate how to tie a Tenkara Kebari fly. It was a fun day at the angling clubs lodge and casting pool.

Daniel Galhardo, Dr Ishigake, and Masaki Nakano, the Dr's translator, preparing for the casting demonstration. He could easily cast a 19 foot leader and line with his 15 foot rod.

We all met at Daniel's home that evening and before we left for dinner and after sharing thoughts about Tenkara and admiring the 14 nets Daniel has built, begun or is in the process of building, Dr. Ishigaki presented a gift to Sherry and I. This was completely unexpected from a guest in our country. We were presented with a hand carved and painted trout pin and scissors.

I am afraid to use them for fear of breaking a fin off of such a nice gift. I'll need to be very careful!

We'll be fishing tomorrow outside of Yosemite and I'm looking forward to learning more from the man known as the Tenkara King in Japan. He does all this on his own dime by the way. He loves teaching others about Tenkara.

Very cool, Rick! That is a sweet gift. All the more so for being unexpected. I wish I'd been able to attend this.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

That's pretty darn cool! And, I'm looking at that casting pool and thinking "Wow, now that's serious business right there." Have a great trip!

Nice!
Those GG casting ponds are magical. I have been remiss to take on the Tenkara approach but see its merits.

Looks like a great day. This style of fishing is so appealing for the small creeks around my neck of the woods... One problem the wife has band me on new gear til the end of the year... And I have this new salt addiction thing going on lol!!!

Very cool, Rick! I wondered what you were doing in SFO. Is that the casting pond in Golden Gate Park? The gifts he gave you were beautiful.

You made a Tenkara believer out of me when we did the quarter mile hike up the creek. It makes little creek fishing almost effortless.

Rick,

Sounds like a rare learning experience. Good for you. I'd love to give this style of fishing a try.

Very cool! It must be a real treat, rubbing elbows with Tenkara royalty. I could be wrong, but I think I've seen a video of the Dr's translator, explaining and fishing Tenkara.

This probably flies in the face of the Tenkara system, but I wonder how far you could cast with the rod. I bet a long way, if you attached the right fly line.
