Heads up

Postby meb » September 26th, 2010, 12:43 pm

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I want to share what happened last weekend in the local SB mountains. My buddy and I had fished one the well known spots where two creeks come together to create some fun fishing. When we got back to our truck there was another truck parked fifty feet away and facing us. As we changed, the driver of the truck appeared from somewhere, opened the door, and stood there for about five or ten minutes. I thought he was about to ask us how the fishing was, but he just stood there staring. I didn't think too much about it, but later my buddy said he thought the guy seemed weird. He left by backing uphill away from us rather than coming down and turning around which I thought was odd because he really spun his wheels to back up.

So as we left to drive out, we came to the beginning of the road heading up, and the guy is parked on the road and stopped, blocking us from going around. I pulled up behind him and assumed he was doing something and waited for him to notice us and head on. After a few minutes he did, but it seemed strange that it took him as long as it did.

I didn't want to drive in his dust and gave him a hundred or two hundred yards head start. When we got to the top of the first grade and came around a corner, there he was stopped in the road blocking us. Now I'm starting to think this guy is some kind of freak who is looking for a confrontation. This is a good time to mention that neither my buddy or I were armed, although we often are. Again I waited until he started up and left and then I gave him a long time to get ahead, hoping to see the last of him. My friend who had paid more attention to him at the parking lot was convinced this guy was a weirdo, but I kept trying to think of reasons for his actions that weren't as sinister. Anyway I told Rich I wasn't that worried and would only be worried if we came around to a spot that is a hairpin turn where you drive though some shallow water under the forest, because that would be a tough place to back up. Well as you probably have already guessed, when we came to that spot thirty minutes later, he was stopped in the middle of it. I stopped well short and waited and after about five minutes he left. At this point I waited until he was out of sight, backed up and turned around, and took another series of roads out.

However, I kept worrying that we would come around a corner and be face to face with him. We never saw him again, but it was pretty weird. He was a fat white guy driving a bright blue full size truck. Kind of a weird colored blue.

There may be some simple explanation for his actions, but I'm guessing he was some sort of nut. Hopefully, nobody else will encounter him.

I've run into some quite strange people down there.

Also some incredibly hot girls in bikinis in the warmer months. Unfortunately they got down there with the dude-bros in the bro trucks.

Actually, Rayfound and I were in the kind of general vicinity of that area today and saw the following on three different areas:

• Old guy with a big beer belly wandering randomly in a forested area with a blue tshirt and black briefs. (On his way to CNFF certification?)
• A very clean very white french poodle running around in the woods.
• A guy hanging out with his tailgate down playing a fiddle...

So I guess it's not uncommon to run into uncommon people up there. Stay safe!

Nick,

We were kind of scared of what might happen, not so much for our safety, but just of a confrontation that could get out of hand. It's not the way I want to end a day of fishing. Now, as you say, he may have just been a rest stop homo, but I haven't had any experience with that crowd and will have to take your word on that.
