I‘ve been hanging around for the last 6 months and realized that I’d never posted an intro.
Originally from Hamilton Ontario Canada, moved here when I was a kid.
In the 60’s, I fished with my Dad in the Sierras, Oregon and Washington on lakes mostly. Dad likes fishing from boats and we’d usually rent one when we were on summer vacation.
In my 20’s we’d climb the fence and fish Silverwood Lake at the spillway for cats on Friday nights. I fished Silverwood and Puddingstone for Trout and Bluegill, local creeks for trout and made the occasional trip to the June Lake Loop.
In 1985, I was living next door to a guy that was married and whenever I’d come home late, he’d have his garage door open slightly with the lights on. One night I knocked and asked what he was up to. He showed me his tying bench and the flies that he’d been tying. I told him that I knew nothing about fly fishing . He showed me his book and video collection on what fish eat, where and when they eat and how to fool them into eating what you’re casting. I must have seemed interested because he asked if I’d like to try fly fishing, I said yes so a couple of weeks later we went to the Owens River.
It was late October, cold and windy with occasional snow flakes. I spent most of the day snagging everything including me. I must have lost a dozen flies. I was watching a trout feeding in an eddy and after a bunch of attempts managed to land a fly 3’ in front of the fish with a nice drift, the fish took the fly, I set the hook and although I made a mess of the line trying to strip him in, I caught my fist fish on a fly. It started snowing hard and we had to leave, I didn’t fly fish again for a long time but I won’t forget that fish.
In the 80’s and 90’s I always spent at least one week a year fishing the Sierras, mostly the June Lake loop. A couple of years ago, we went with a friend’s family to June Lake for a week. The friend brought his fly fishing gear…rods, reels, line, flies, tubes, waders, fins, etc. I spent the week fishing with a spin rod and he fly fished. I paid attention to what he was doing and I got a basic understanding of what I needed to get started and how it’s done.
A couple of weeks later I’m at Bass Pro buying Power Bait, I wandered into the Fly shop and there was a Sage 5wt package with reel, line, backing and a case. I bought it, Lefty Krehs “Basic Fly Fishing” book, a couple of basic tools and headed out the door.
Since then, I’ve picked up a couple of rods, spare spools, waders, boots, and a float setup. I’ve got a few books and videos. I started tying and really enjoy it. I’m learning something new all the time. I bought a place in Mammoth 2 years ago and get to fish more now than ever.
I looked around at a bunch of other boards but I like this one best. It seems that the members here are knowledgeable and friendly. I’ve learned a lot from the posts here and I’m hoping that I’ll run into one or two of you on the water eventually.
