Battery Mortality-helpful hint

Postby fflutterffly » November 23rd, 2010, 7:19 am

As for Battery mortality! I was on the Kern one year, in winter, fishing with Karen and driving the Prius. The Battery died, which also meant I couldn't use the key-thob...we hitched a ride from 17.5 miles to kernville, called toyota and they told us there was a little key inside the thob. Got a ride back up to the 17.5, got the hood opened, had it jumped, drove directly to Pep Boys and purchased a jumper box for $150.00 THE BEST THING I OWN!!! I've used it about a dozen times since on my own cars and helped others. I never go on a trip without one in our car. (Plus I don't have to rely on AAA) They have three sizes. This holiday I'm getting the small one to keep in the Prius so i don't have to swap it out or forget to move it from one car to the other. If you're out in the semi or complete wilderness, as many of us are without phone service, it's a great POM (Peace of Mind)

Thanks for the helpful hint. I didn't know such a thing even existed. I'm contemplating adding one to my Christmas Wish List.

I've always wanted one of those. Thanks for the reminder Ariel.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

So true Ariel, those things are life savers. My father-in-law has one and it will even start my old truck. That truck draws so much current it usually takes two sets of jumper cables in parallel to start. Plus it has a built in compressor. Size of a lunch box. He got his at Cosco

I've carried a couple of those in my old pickup. Saved the day a couple times, but their lifespan, was very short. Like anything, buy a good quality unit. The cheapies don't last(hold a full charge) very long, and when you need them, they'll let you down. Also, you periodically need to plug them in, to keep them topped off. We've been through more than a few.

We carry them in our cars at work and they are handy when you need them. Plus, when water-boarding gets old on bait fishermen, it's nice to have the portable juice :o

We treat it just as all our gear. We we arrive home we plug it in for one day, charge and then set it on a wooden shelf. This is very old school and I don't know if it still matters, but on the ranch we never put anything that had a charge on the ground or cement, since it was believed the charge would be lost from cold or some other mythical creature. When purchasing this kind of thing I always make sure it is the best I can afford. As I mention I purchased the largest charge box I could since we are often in cold weather and needed the power.

Ariel,

Funny you should mention batteries dying on a Kern fishing trip. I took Rich to Fairview a week ago Friday and had the battery die in the parking lot. Fortunately, the kind folks at McNally's graciously jumped my RAV and we drove back to Bakersfield. I shut it off when I arrived home only to find it still dead. Got up early the next AM and replaced it.
