steelhead guide question

Postby #1stunna » December 5th, 2010, 5:58 pm

Hi guys,

Me and some friends will be up about an hour past San Francisco in a couple weeks. One of my buddies and I would like to try some steelhead fishing. We are both avid small trout stream fly fishermen, but have never tried fishing for steelhead and thought we'd give it a shot (who doesn't want to catch monster sea run trout? ). Any one have any recommendations for drift boat guides in that area? Personally, I have no fishing experience up there..... that's why we want to do a guided trip, so any help would be appreciated. Most likely we will be checking out the Russian River (anyone with experience on this river?) since it is very close, but are willing to drive a little further if we have better chances. Shoot me a PM if you feel more comfortable that way too.

thanks in advance,
Ethan

How about gear? I know nothing of hard head fishing but at least 6/7 wt gear with backing? ;) The pinko isn't that big but at least gear up unless the guide supplies. Let us know the results. 209er

you're right 209, i was going to either rent gear or hopefully have it supplied by the guide. I have an extra 6 weight rod, but my friend does not. Renting just seems like a better option for us. We have all the rain gear and waders/boots, but just not the rods and flies... I guess i'm kinda asking for the total package lol. A good guide, rods and maybe a fish? I'll definitely post our results when we get back.

The Russian hasn't been fishing well over the past years so I would let the guide recommend where he thinks the fishing would be best in that area. * Creek, the Gualala, the Trinity, the Smith, all these have better runs and would be a better option I would think. Call The Fly Shop out of Redding for better info on guides.
