A hole in the water you.......

Postby briansII » December 13th, 2010, 12:15 pm

.......throw money into.

Last weekend was full of promise. Water was warming back up, and I heard the fish were on the chew again. The big thing was, I didn't have to work on the B-O-A-T that weekend. After working on more than a couple problems the previous weekends, and replacing all THREE batteries, I was set to have a full weekend of fishing. Just fishing.

I'll throw in a report while I'm grumbling:

Saturday AM was productive. I caught some stripers up to about 6lbs. I ran into NorCal Bob and his son. They were good luck, as I hooked up as soon as we recognized each other. They left briefly to hit a spot, but came right back. His son proceeded to lay waste to the stripers at that run.....oh, and Bob was allowed to catch a couple too. ;-) We went opposite directions, and they went on to find some nice fish. I found some less than nice fish, but had a decent afternoon. Before the evening we ran into each other again, at the same spot, but most of the fish had sore lips from the morning session. Good to see/meet you Bob. Almost forgot. I ran into another friend I hadn't seen in a longtime. We talked about fishing together the next morning.

Next morning I sleep in a bit. The fog is suppose to be thick, but by the time I'm ready to head out, it's clear, with overcast/high fog. It's warm(57 degrees), and zero wind. Incoming tide should be moving just right. It's going to be a great morning! I motor off across a large, lake-like section to one of my favorite spots. I get about a 1/4-1/2 mile away from the marina when my day comes to an end. Motor sputters, then dies. I do a little quick check, and try and restart. Nothing........oh wait, is that smoke? I go over and give a sniff. Yep, that's smoke coming out from the engine cover. I pop the cover off as fast as I can, and see a small electrical fire. My first thought is to grab the fire extinguisher. I look around, but think, "hey, why not just blow it out". Duh. That worked. But something is still smoking. The underside of the cover is burning. Blow. BLOW!! Still burning! Now I need the fire extinguisher!! A calm, but condescending voices pops into my head. "Uh, your surrounded by water!" A few splashes puts the fire out, but now I'm dead in the water.....literally. I wonder who I should call to get a tow back. Vessel Assist is just back by the marina. Same voice. "Duh. You have a trolling motor, stupid."

So I have a nice, quiet ride back to the marina. I contemplate what to do. I just paid for another month to keep the B-O-A-T at the marina, but I sure don't think I can fix it myself. It's Sun, and no local mechanics are going to be open. I have to tow the thing back home, but first I have to replace a trailer light. :fireangry: The B-O-A-T is now at a mechanic's shop. No word on the cost yet.

Yep. Just fishing.

PS, the bonus was I got home early and got to put the Christmas Tree up. yeah!

Been there done that. They still are pretty handy to cover the big water.

Dang dude, I thought I brought you good luck (since you hooked up immediately after I yelled hello!), but I guess the old Bob curse sunk you the next day! Life is a beach when you own a boat, and the old saying is true, a boat is a hole in the water you throw $100 bills down!! For any one thinking of buying a boat, rent one don't buy one-a lot less headache that way! Good luck with the boat, you have my sympathy, and I just spent $1K fixing my boat a month ago!

Bob. It's not you. It's all boat owners of the world. Just off the phone with the mechanic. Not going to be cheap. :(

Sorry dude, that totally sucks :fireangry:
Hopefully, you'll stay under my $1K :grouphug:
Dang, how did you get a boat mechanic so quick? My last boat job took two weeks before the mechanic could even see it! :fireangry:

I've never owned a boat, but I have always been told by people that do that the two best days of being a boat owner are.....

1. The day you buy it.

2. The day you sell it.

:( :( :(

Just barely under 1k.

We live out here in the sticks. Not too hard to find a boat mechanic with openings in his schedule. Our first local choice was going on vacation today, but the second, local choice said he could do it right away. Just need to make sure he can get the parts. Good news is a Merc parts distribution center is in Fresno. His shop is about 15-20 minutes from there....and me. I might be back on the water by next weekend.

I really hate that condescending voice in the head sometimes. Like in my last report where I got stuck in the thorns and bushes - it kept saying to me "I told you that you should have just waded back downstream and gotten out there instead of trying to cut through here."

Good luck with getting your boat and trailer up and running again. :( Jon

At least you got in one good day of fishing, or a least I think it was. I've spent many days with my Dad on Lake Mohave and Havasu trouble shooting boat problems or getting to the ramp only to find out it wont start :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse: It sucks, and sometimes you're 50 miles away from the marina, at least you were close.

It never ever ends with those things. After the first couple of years there WILL be something that needs to get fixed that you didn't count on. Good luck hopefully it's done by friday!!!

It's not going to be done by Friday. They found all the parts locally, except the main one. It's coming from MI. I had the option of paying a lot more to get it here quicker, but I opted not to do that.

I'm sticking a fork in it. My Delta striper season is pretty much over. I may go back up if I hear some good reports, but I doubt it. It's been a good year for quality and quantity, so why push it....... Well, I still need to land that 20+ lber so if I may hit it one more time.......... ;)
