2011 California fishing license

Postby FishingHiker » December 29th, 2010, 4:13 am

So I went in today for my new license. Almost $50 bucks later I was given a receipt and was told that is my 2011 license. I asked where I add endorsement stamps and was told I had to pay for all endorsements at once or I would have to carry additional endorsement license receipts with my license receipt. I was also told that the paper the "license" is printed on is heat sensitive and not to get it hot or it will turn black. What happens if it turns black? You have to shell out more $$$ for a replacement license(s). I don't know how true this is but just in case I have made color copies of my license just in case my originals turns black.

Well that kind of sucks... Making extra copies would be a great idea, if you have a scanner that would be another idea to consider as well.

Trying to understand this new process I keep hearing about.....

So if your license is just the receipt showing that you paid for it, are you just making copies of the receipt? And these receipts are what we have to carry next year?

Sounds odd that they will only give you a receipt to use as your license. Maybe that's right, but maybe they were misinformed. I have heard the steelhead report card is big now, and is a hassle to carry. I also heard about the thermal ink, and not to laminate, because it will turn black.

I just bought mine online. At the end of the process, you can print out your license, and receipt. They are two separate files, that you can download and save. The license is a temporary, but looks like your typical license. Your permanent is supposed to be mailed within 15 days.....that's when the temp lic. expires. The receipt shows what you paid for, and how much. With steelhead card and ocean stamp, I think I paid $54.

The license is printed on thermal paper, so I would not leave it on your dashboard on a hot day. I got mine with the endorsements printed along with my LIFETIME LICENSE, cost me $4.89 to add the ocean endorsement. I live here in Carlsbad so surf fishing is always available.

I also wonder how the printing will hold up in a plastic license holder, I've had the printing "transfer" to the plastic on my old licenses.

Maybe fold your receipt/license so your name and endorsements are not exposed. If you get checked you'll have to dig it out, but maybe it will be better protected.

We'll see how these work, it is the first year, so give it a fair shot first.

Sounds exactly like the licenses in WA state. Basically just a thick receipt. They have the same problems with the color issues. The old ones I had usually wore off. They particularly had problems with the catch report portions completely wearing off and leaving a blank piece of paper.

Thermal paper for something that is going to be outdoors, in cars, and everywhere in between?

Got mine yesterday, was told the same thing, funny the guys says it's waterproof, big deal, one day on the river in it's holder and it is toast!

I asked them how do I get a replacement if I loose it, the Mgr. said not to worry, I am in the system and it shows that I paid, so no reciept is necessary, makes sense to me.
Cool part was all they did was scan my CDL and all the info was there, just had to sign the license.

I guess you no longer have to display it, so exposure should not be an issue.

Sometimes you gotta love technology, but sometimes you just gotta hate it!

Happy New Year!

I just got home from purchasing my 2011 fishing license. The new process is great! My earlier comments were for not!

It's just like what they are doing in Montana and Idaho, just a slide of the drivers license and you're in the system. Here is what the new license looks like minus the black lines ;) As far as durability of the ink and paper, I just shredded my licenses from when I went up to Montana, it was still looking like the day I purchased it, that was about one and a half years ago, this is the same type of paper and ink I believe. I like the new process.

Soooo California finally got in on that Scan System.. like most all other Western States have been for years.... About Time.... I hope this new method also does the Cool trick where it ID's Violators and Prevents them from Getting a New License. I was told that the System ID's Violators in Neighboring States and will not allow them to buy a License.... My Friend in Oregon states that Oregon will not sell a License to Folks who have Violated Fish & game Laws in neighboring States...

Got go out soon and Pick up my 2011 license....

I just printed mine off the home computer. I hope the real one comes in the mail like they said it will.

I'll be buying mine online too. It was so easy last year I'll do it that way from now on.

I did the same thing last week and that is the only thing bad about buying online, waiting for the actual licence. It's kind of funny that I have no problem ordering a couple hundred dollars worth of gear on but when it comes to the government and my licence I stress about it.

I just happen to be near Turner's Outdoorsman in Pasadena, so I stopped in for the license. It was super fast, must have been there about two minutes.

looks familiar. In Colorado if your late on your child support no license. Basically if you have any pending issues no fishing.
