Peeve Remedies

Postby briansII » January 6th, 2011, 5:51 pm

....and it's ok to post more than one! ;)

With so many frustrating things happening in our little slice of heaven we call "the quiet sport", what have you done to help relieve the anguish when some butt*#@! low holes or drops in right on top of you. It's ok to name any other "peeve", and a remedy.....or two.

1. My most used remedy is to lower my expectations for the day. I don't plan on any sort of solitude, and expect someone to break one or more etiquette rules. I started using that on my local tailwater, but have taken to use it on about 60% of my outings.

2. If I'm feeling feisty, I will mess with a interloper. It not only relieves frustration, but makes for some fun entertainment. When someone crowds or cuts me off, I have literally cut off, shadowed, or squeezed someone so aggressively, that they just leave the area. A highlight memory to this remedy. I once had a guy across a channel from me, almost running along the bank, busting brush and tripping on cobble, trying to get ahead of me. I purposely didn't make eye contact, and acted as if he didn't exist. He never did get to fish the water ahead, and finally gave up and left. I sat down and lit up a cigar in celebration.

3. If someone crowds me, I just leave. Once in a while I'll make a comment that they can hear, but for the most part, I just move. Painless, and I am happier.

4. If crowded, I will move to the bank, light up a cigar, and observe. Sometimes the offender will look back at me, and quickly move on. Sometimes they just leave after they are done. If I wait long enough, I get my spot back. If I catch a fish after they have pounded that spot, I get to privately display, a potty eating grin.

I just keep on fishing. And if the fishing really sucks I take a drive and some scenery picutres.

Most of the time (99.9%) I'm going to walk away but if somebody really rubs me the wrong way I don't think clearly and if I'm in my boat even more so. About a month ago I was fishing with my brother a Diamond, I was going to a high spot I know of at the dam. Now this spot is about 50x100 feet of so. Anyway I get there and start figuring out which way is the drift and I notice a boat coming in our direction from a half mile away full blast. I tell my brother it looks like it might be DFG to get ready to get your licence out. I put down the electric and this boat isn't DFG but circles around me and throws out his anchor not 50 feet from where I am. I'm too shocked to say anything, it was right where I was going to be fishing, then he starts to back his boat towards mine and throws out another anchor! I am really *.:fireangry: :fireangry: :fireangry: I tell my brother this spot is done, those guys were going to fish the high spot didn't matter who was there. I pull up my electric and told my brother to hang on. Started the boat and proceeded to do a couple of laps around him, wide open. I think he was too shocked to say anything, then rootertailed out full blast. I know I shouldn't have done it I'm not that kind of guy and I know they just don't know better but I felt better. Then about 4 hours later were fishing in another cove and I see this same guy coming right for us again, I'm getting ready for a confrontation and then when the boat is 500 feet from us I think he see's who it is and decides not to get too close to a couple of crazy flyfisherman (I mean who flyfishes at Diamond anyway!) and just peels away. Yea, it felt good.

I find the best solution is to catch fish while they don't. Nothing is more satisfying when some guy wades in up stream, a family with six crying toddlers plunks their power bait within 3 feet of my tube, or * in a 14 foot Valco trolls across my fly line, than to catch a bunch of fish, especially of they are not. Honestly, I'm getting all misty just thinking about it. When I leave and they are pointing at me whispering, trying to figure out my secret and I have just released a dozen fish in 20 minutes and their going to be eating beans that night, I am almost glad they showed up. Petty and childish, but very satisfying.

Unfortunately, I can't conjure that scene up at will, though it has happened often enough.
