2011 Fly Fishing Film Tour

I grew up in LB and spent a lot of time casting on the LBCC pond before I moved to OC. I plan on stopping by for awhile and it would be nice to meet some of the board members. I've fished with a few that were on the old Southwest board. A few beers sound good, although I won't be staying for the movie.

Tonight's show in Ventura was pretty good. I liked this year's film location at the Majestic Theater. The sound was excellent,the film selections were good, the crowd was hooting and hollering, and they gave us hats. Gotta love it! Hope you guys enjoy the show in Long Beach!

It was a hootin hollerin great time as we watched guys trying to net 8lb browns in brook trout sized nets! LOL! This was a fun night out, oh, and I scoreda sweet Fishpond cest/back pack at the Long Beach Casting Club this am.

Saw a few familiar faces for a minute on the way out. Looked like a decent FFA showing. They were all great films. I think I liked Low and Clear (crazy trout fisher guy) and Conway's the best. The New Zealand one was super good, too.

It looks and sounds like everybody who attended the club event and movie had a fun time. I know I did. The movies were awesome, if you missed it; you need to see them somewhere. It was nice putting a face on the names from other addicts. Did anybody get a few photos?

I had a blast! Best fly fishing films around lots of cool people showed up.It would be hard to pick a favorite.Most extreme film, I'd say definitely goes to Speed,Muscle,& Teeth my hat is off to Conway.It was cool seeing/meeting some of the addict forum peeps as well as others.See you guys next year spread the word.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to drop in and say hello. My name is Robby King and I'm the "mostly" one man band behind the film Speed, Muscle and Teeth that is a documentary of sorts about Conway. I did a google search to see what people were saying about the film and ended up on this board - I'm a fly fishing film tour nut and love how inspirational the tour can be to promote the sport we all love.

First off, I was thrilled to see so many people show up in Ventura and Long Beach. The tour did a great job of getting great venues for the stops this year. I wish they had done a bit more advertising but overall the shows had a great showing - especially Long Beach.

I hope everyone like SMT - my goal was to tell a good story about one of the greatest ambassadors we have in the sport today. I didn't want to make him look like a walking Mountain Dew commercial but I realize I walk a fine line because of the "extreme" fly fishing Conway does. I tried to let him tell his story of growing up a trout fisherman with his dad and traveling the world going for "typical" fish with a fly rod. The point of his story is essentially that if everyone was as passionate about their local fishery as Conway was that everyone would have a vacation right in their back yard. He's not going after makos because he thinks people will think he's cool if he does - he just has a passion for it. All the extreme stuff and labels like that don't matter to him...

SMT touches a lot on conservation and Conway's efforts to educate but also protect fishing rights. The guy really walks the walk when it comes to stuff like that and he has a lot to say - it just wasn't the time to say much about it at the tour stop because people just want to be entertained. He also has a lot to say about unity between ALL the brookie junkies, trout bums, permit posses, tarpon nuts - all those different groups that rarely cross over and try new things. Conway think that really hurts our sport and that we need unity to protect our fisheries and understand the issues another group might be battling at one point or another. Like I said, the guy is an awesome ambassador for the sport and I'm very proud to call him a close friend and to be able to give him a large voice in the tour and this film.

If you ever get the chance to meet Conway or even better - go fishing with him - the guy couldn't be nicer or more interested in who you are or what you're involved with. Not the most common thing these days.

With all that said, the film tour was awesome this year! I met the two guys who were the stars of the Muskie film and they were just as they seem in the film. Awesome guys who made the drive out from Wisconsin to see their film play on a big screen. I thought that film was really cool in that it was able to show a fishery that gets very little attention in the fly fishing world - and they showed it with enthusiasm and fun.

Low and Clear is on an entirely whole other level. In my opinion you couldn't achieve better cinematography. The story is intriguing and Xenie is a complete nut (in the best possible meaning) worthy of a story dedicated to his passion for fishing. Awesome film that blows everything else away.

Just wanted to stop in and give my 2 cents about the tour and to say thank you for coming out to support the tour. I will be pushing the tour to make a stop in San Diego later this year so hopefully that will go well. If any of you will be at the Pasadena show this weekend stop by and say hello to Conway and I....he's much more interesting though.....

Robby ... Excellent job on the film. I was at the Long Beach showing and I really dug it. When I told my friend that wasn't there about it, his reaction was, "HOLY S***, Makos on the fly!!??" Can't wait for the full version.
