Fantasy Retirement Locale for Fly Addict

Postby ptflashback » February 10th, 2011, 7:44 pm

As I sit here entrapped by the Army's fascination with Power Point, I often ponder about my retirement. Often I spend countless hours daydreaming about the perfect retirement spot for a fly fisherman. Considering, I am curious about the fellow Addicts' opinions about where they would stake claim if given the right opportunity.

Sifting through the criteria, I've considered the general quality of life, housing costs, and potential educational opportunities for my son who will be entering high school. This is, of course, in addition to a place that affords nearby waters that are accessible and not unreasonably pressured by goons.

So, with that being said, what say ye? As of today's date, I'm heading to Logan, Utah. :bananadance:

Anywhere in the southeast near Saltwater for me. If I was rich it would be Montauk in the spring/summer through fall and New Orleans or the Keys in the winter.

Well, for me personally, I'm leaving California as soon as I retire. I'm pondering Colorado, specifically the Colorado Springs area.

K9:

The Springs is definately high on the list. Elevenmile Canyon, the South Platte, and Arkansas all within an hour. Hard fighting bows and monster browns. Not a bad city to live in either: Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak.

I spent about four good years there and wouldn't mind hanging my hat in Woodland Park at all. Good call.

It's San Diego for me! Already bought my house and am almost ready to start counting the days 'til retirement. Target date is currently April 2012 but that's subject to a bit (but not much) of uncertainty.

Moved to Bishop 14 years ago. Put three kids through the school system. I get to play in the outdoors all the time.

"The Golden Triangle" - I heard this term used to describe the area where the borders of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming meet. As far as your son's education, that's a whole different ball game. I read somewhere (don't know how reliable the data) that only Minnesota, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, Utah, and Vermont have high school graduation rates over 90% and all of those I would say are pretty good fishing states.

At this point I plan to keep my house in san diego because its the best weather that I have found. I will jump in my motorhome and see the states. Kinda of a nomadic life seeing and fishin the states. I figure that way I can have a retirement home anywhere, rivers, lakes, mountains. Eight to thirteen more years cant wait.

All your plans sound great!

The Wife and I have already decided, WE ARE CURRENTLY LIVING IN OUR RETIREMENT HOME! (it's paid for)
She is already retired, I have two more years at the most.

We can rent a place anywhere we choose for some duration while the weather and fishing are good, then return to HOME BASE to figure out where we are going to move to next!

And when we are stuck here for a while, I can always go fish our great locals with FlyAddict, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK !

I went fishing with Dr. Creek and Midger once, in the middle of the week and it was great! Nobody else was there, and the fish had already recovered from the onslaught of the previous weekend!

Since this is a FANTASY retirement local, my local would be close to all my family and friends. It would have the best surf fishing and saltwater game fish you could imagine, the kind you find off the baja coast, big tuna, dorado, yellows etc...etc.... I'm not done yet! It would have a beautiful forest of lush pines meeting the sea, with rivers filled with huge migrating steelhead and sea-run browns. The small creeks would have goldens to your hearts content, the lakes filled with monster brookies. I could keep fantasizing but I know such a place does not exist, so for now I'll stick to SoCal
